Budget 5.1 System for $500?

I'm looking for a 5.1 system for about $500. This is for the speakers only. I am gonna save seperately for the receiver. Currently I am considering either the Infinity TSS-1100 system or a Velodyne CHT Front Row/Bic H100 Combo. I'm also open to any other suggestions. I would like speakers that could be easily wallmounted, or put on stands if necessary. Thanks, Rob

I've heard a few good comments about the HSU Ventriloquist systems, which should be in your price range, but I've never heard them myself. However, you might want to consider spending around $1000 for your system. You will have a lot more options and be able to fill more space (depends on the size of your room).

I not sure of your rooms dimensions, but in a small to mediun size room I'd recommend it. I know a couple of people who picked these up and I'm still friends with them.

Good call on the Athena system. Also, you may want to consider this KEF Sub Sat system. The enclosures are made form die-cast aluminum and A4L is an authorized dealer.

Also - Vanns has your Infinity system for 1/2 off

I'm not a huge fan of the tiny sub/sat systems, but some of them are not bad for the money.

Too bad you can't go to $1k. M&K was selling one of their 5.1 bookshelf/sub system for 65% off. It sounds ridiculously good and has awesome build quality to boot, plus it's made in the USA. I just checked the site thought and they jsut sold-out.

I wish I could afford 1,000 but at this point I can't since I'm still in school. I figure once I am out and have a job i'll be able to upgrade. That is why I was considering the infinity tss-1100 since they are on sale currently.

it's your decision! I know the Athena Micra system is a soild candidate and well within your budget. As you have mentioned if your keeping it short term don't spend more then you have to. I'd use the $$$ saved for better things.

That I'm not sure about that?. However, it rocked most system priced in class. Didn't you read the review. To be honest IMO most HTIB set ups aren't great. Don't be fooled into thinking that spending more will get you more. The one thing they all lack is a great sub and that's why their prices are appealing.

Yeah i've read the reviews on both. Seem like they are both competent systems. The infinity's seem like they are being closed out due a replacement model so they might be a good buy for what they are selling at. Tough decisions. I wish I had bought the athena's when best buy cleared them out. I could have saved some money.

I'd like to compare a set of Polk R15s with the Dayton Sub-12 vs the Micra 6 and Ventriloquist systems.

BTW, 6 Polk R15s + the Dayton Sub-12 would be just above $300.

The R15s are on sale for $50/pair from Frys.com


The matching center, the CSi25, is currently $70, so 4 R15s + 1 CSi25 + 1 Dayton Sub-12 would come in under $350, but Frys is currently out of stock on the CSi25. They do let you preorder though.

The Athena always gets great reviews...Definitely a good bang for the buck system!



How about this: 5 Athena C.5 from AudioAdvisor for $75 each, shipped (if you order, ask for Tim. He will take care of you!) . These are centers, but you can use them as a 5 speaker surround system. Then go with an 8" Dayton subwoofer and you're under $500 shipped. If you need better LF response, then go with the 10" Sub from Dayton, which will put you just over $500, when you add shipping. The cool think about going with the 5 Athena centers is that they have the Teteron tweeter that all other Athenas have (except for the Micra 6). Upgrading will be easy. When you're ready for towers or bookshelves (check out Audio Advisor for some great deals), sell your left and right speakers on ebay and snap-up some new speakers that match your surrounds and centers nicely.

Though I'm not a huge fan of these, you can get a 10" Polk sub for $199 shipped or an MTX low-profile sub for $149 shipped, maybe less if you have a coupon code. Personally, I think that the dayton subs are better for the money, especially when you have good i/o, adjustable crossovers and phase switches.
