Brand new to audio

I read the recommended system in the articles here. The axioms and the AV123 UFW-10 sub woofer combination.

I also thinking of getting the Yamaha receiver RX-V1600.

My room is about 18'x15' with the right side with no wall all. Left side of the room is a large window with draps and a front door. An 8' ceiling. Front and back walls sheet rock.

Just looking for educated opionions. Especially those who already own any of the above.

Ulw-10

For the price difference, the ULW-10 is a better buy. There's a link on the product review page here to take $100 of the ULW-10. Making it, I think, $399 vs $599 for the UFW-10. The UFW has a nicer finish then the ULW. Performance of each is on par with each other (I tried both), with an edge for the ULW for easy setup with automatic PEQ.

Niether of these are real bass monsters. If your interests include HT, I'd take a look at the outlaw lfm-1 (tried one and has lots of bass) or some of the Hsu or SVS (not tried any) offerings in about the same price range as the UFW. Music wise, the ULW or UFW might have a slight advantage on the ported subs. But, I wouldn't be to worried about that. I personally don't hear much difference until you move into servo controlled subs. Servos do sound better to me for music. All those are out of this price range.

Thanks for the reply. I did run accross that artical about the cheaper woofer. I do want HT so perhaps I need to look elsewhere as you mentioned.

Anyone else have any suggestions for good HT woofers in the low price point area?

whats your budget? Your room is mid sized, but missing a wall. Thats going to reqiure a woofer with alot of output to make up for the lack of wall.

For HT, go SVS PB10 or PB12 ISD.
$429 and $599 plus shipping at the website.
Also check Audiogon, ebay, and google for used SVS.

Outlaw LFM-1

Check out ww.outlawaudio.com and look for the LFM-1. Very nice sub @ $579. It will rattle things around a room the size of your with no problem.

For non-sub speakers, it's gets much more difficult to recommend because people do have a preference for the sound of the speakers. They all don't sound the same or image the same.

I suggest you start by listening to some in local hi-fi shops (not BB or CC). If you find some you really like the sound of, then go with those. While in the local shop, tell them you want them to explain imaging and demonstrate some speakers that can do it well. Take some of your music, and don't fear if they have some on hand better recommeded. They should have something well recorded for you to hear some differences. You fav. CD might not be all that well authored, and it will make a difference in what you can hear.

You might want to audition a pair or two on line. The return shipping can add up pretty fast. But, you can get some very nice speakers.

The Outlaw LFM-1 is right in my budget, but I could go slightly higher if there is serious value in doing so.

I'll read more on the SVS PBs, I'm leaning towards the Outlaw though. What do others here have in that price point or are you all ... pardon me for saying ... audioholics

The problems I have in going to hifi shops are

#1 I don't have a trained ear. I still think clipping is only something cheaters do in online gaming and debth is something that is talked about over water.

#2 They are likely to have a nice sound room that is nothing like where I going to put it.

You guys are clearly passionate about your hobbie and I'd trust what was said here far more than any salesman somewhere. I also don't have the patience or budget for swapping subs to test.

Thank you a hundred times over for your opinions. I really like good audio, but never took the time to learn it. Finally I'm taking the time.

It does not require a trained ear to hear speakers image. You will hear vocals between the two speakers. Sort of like having a center channel. Also, it's some what of a matter of taste for how speakers sound.

If you just want some nice speakers that sound good to a lot of people, check out the speakers on AV123.com, or Axiom web sites. A lot also like Polk, and certain series of Klipsch (don't recall which series). There is a major difference in the way they sound. The latter two can be heard at local shops

If you email SVS or HSU, they will reply with a specific subwoofer model that will work best in your room. Both companies are honest and don't try to oversell.

Thank you very much. I've read several great help posts from you around this site and I very much appreciate how helpful you've been to all of us noobs.

I'm pretty much sold on the SVS Pb10 subwoofer and the axiom book shelf system. I did have trouble choosing between the Outlaw and the SVS woofer though. I liked the size of the outlaw, but just too many things mentioned about the pb10 to pass up since I mostly want this an ht system.

I gonna keep an eye out for reviews of svs new ht system coming out, but the axioms are proven so it'll have to be a pretty strong review to change my mind.

Do you think it would be better to go with the yamaha rx-v1600 or the rx-v2500? I'd really like the 2600, but it's a bit out of my price range.

Unless you have to have HDMI switching, go for the Yamaha RX-V2500. It will have more power and features (except HDMI) than the RX-V1600. You should be able to find the 2500 from authorized dealers in the $700 price range, less than the new 1600 model.

Thanks, that is what seemed to make the most sense to me (RX-V2500).

So this is pretty much my final thoughts to what I'm going to get:

Yamaha RX -V2500
SVS Pb10ID sub
Axiom M22ti bookshelf, VP100 center, M2i surrounds

Decent HT sound system for around 2k I would think.

Any cable experts out there can tell me a good budget cable set to order to put all this together? I haven't the faintest idea of what cables to get for my 15'x18' room. I'm replacing the flooring so I have a perfect opportunity to put in the cables without going attic hopping. Truely though, I'm not sure what to do.

.....KC, forget the word expert because I'm replying, and consider SoundKing speaker-wire....it's the best I've worked with ever, and I've worked with a few.....this place has very decent prices, and you will need to specify SoundKing over the other brand.....
