I am guessing Oppo will be shooting for release to take advantage of the holidays, but we don't want to rush them. We just want them to do it right :) If they have internal decoding with multichannel analog out, I will drive over there and pick one up that day :D

I have mine inside a closed rack (glass doors, no back, sides are perforated) and I don't hear the fan unless it is REALLY quiet. Mine only steps up to level 2 when it is very warm out - even then, when playing games or watching movies, there is very little chance of actually hearing the fan going over the rest of my system....
Hmmmmm........that is good to hear. At times, I can hear the fan on my Toshiba A-3 which surprises me as my ht room stays quite cool. Doesn't sound like the PS3 will pose any problem with respect to fan noise. Thanks John for posting.

Cheers,

Phil

My A2 is louder than my PS3, and the A2's fan seems to run a lot more often. The PS3 with the fan at "2" is about the same as the A2.

My Pana BD-30 is in an open audio rack. I got it when I saw that someone had finally solved DTS-MA (Sony had not quite yet provided FW at this point).

If its significantly cheaper than the BD50, I don't see why not. DVD's look like crap on it, though. I still don't care about 2.0.

If using a 7.1 system with 663, you cannot matrix the bitstreams, and the BD-30 only bitstreams the lossless codecs.

Works like a charm. Remote is not backlit, but how many are these days?

Sony is very upgradable because they took the software approach, cost effective. Decoder chips in players are cheaper than those in receivers because they don't need surround processing, post-processing, room correction, and A/D conversion. But, companies can't wait forever for chip companies, so Denon used receiver decoder chips, and just turned off most of the features. This is partly why ADTG's 3800 player is so expensive and overpriced.
My set-up is 5.2 as I do NOT really have the room for 7.2 in my very small ht room. So, the matrixing problem does not apply to me. I can use my Toshiba A-3 for regular dvds as it does a spectacular job of up-converting to near hd quality. However, the PS3 is really winning a lot of points with me right now. Just need to sort this all out first before making my decision. Thanks for the info.

Cheers,

Phil

Yeah, I want them to get it right and I am sure they will. I have been wanting an OPPO for a long time. This is why I have been holding out for so long. Just paid off my Outlaw LFM-1 Pluses so I plan to buy something soon. I may, however, hang in there a while longer before making my decision. Once again John, I appreciate all of your help my friend.

Cheers,

Phil

My A-3 is kinda loud. I have read about the fan noise before, but it never has been much of an issue to me. However, now that my ht room is so much smaller and more confined, fan noise is more of an issue to me. It sounds like the PS3 is quieter than my A-3. Appreciate the info John.

Wow, after hearing about Seth, GlocksRock, and my friend's issues with their PS3, I just don't know what to say.

Maybe an extended warranty is a good idea?

Or if Best Buy has an in-store REPLACEMENT plan, that would be even better.

I am aware of Seth's issue with the PS3, but can you elaborate a bit more regarding Glocks and your friends issues??? Would really be helpful.

Phil

Phil, forget the PS3. You owe it to yourself to splurge and get this. :D

[Thanks goes to allargon for his thread on this.]
Yeah right..........LOL!!!!!!:eek: Even with my discount I still would NOT be able to afford it my friend. There really is no telling what dealer cost would be on such an awesome piece of gear. My guess would be in excess of at least $1000 or so. ;);) Just too much for my budget. Would really like to own something like that though. Thanks for posting Adam.

Well, GlocksRock says that his PS3 has problem with the bluetooth remote. My friend's PS3 just won't load/play anything - it's broken.

It should crush the PS3 at that price.....heck if i paid that for a BR player i would expect it to do alot more than the pioneer player can do. If i had the money to just throw away i still wouldnt get the pioneer. PS3 is the best bang for the buck in reguards to BR playback. All in my opinion of course.

Peace,
Tommy

The remote thing is no big deal to me. Perhaps, your friend's PS3 was just defective. That is not uncommon with respect to electronics these days. Of course, I could easily be wrong but most people seem to like the performance of their PS3s. I will just have to sort it out more before making a final decision. Thanks for the info.

I agree regarding the new Pioneer unit. Really doesn't matter as I can NOT afford it anyways-even with my discount. :D:D The PS3 looks much more doable as far as my budget goes. BTW, hope you and the family are safe after all the flooding. Good to hear from you my friend.

Cheers,

Phil

+1 for the PS3. I've had mine for about a year now with no issues. Bluetooth remote works great and the Logitech Mediaboard makes web browsing a breeze.

PS3 is mediocre of SD-DVD playback...

IF DVD is still a priority for you.. look at the Samsung 2550 with HQV chip. If you dont watch or buy DVD much anymore (like me) i would get the Pioneer 51

From all that I've read about all the Samsung units(old or new) there problems are related to audio codecs and thats a biggy!

I sold my 40G PS3 to my brother almost a year ago. It's over 1 yr old now and it still works perfectly.

Yeah, it's the nature of the beast when it comes to electronics. Sometimes you just have bad luck.
