....."To Bose Or Not To Bose?"....that is the question....I used an analogy incorrectly once upon a time....I said 901's are to to Bose, what Miracle Whip is to Kraft....I change that now to 901's WERE to Bose, what Miracle Whip is to Kraft....floor-standing full-range speakers of the modern era with their incredible, what I call, "point", saw to that....present day, I suspect Bose is deriving most of their profit from the Accoustimass, or however you spell it, Line....why is that?....I think because guys who know nothing about home sound systems, because they were always pleased with the Alpine unit in their truck, and left it at that through the years, notices people are talking about these home "surround" systems, and their interests are whetted enough to tell the wife to go get something....she accepts the assignment with joy with thoughts of SHOPPING, and starts through the stores....modern day floor-standers impress her, but she is drawn, and can't help it, to acceptable-sounding presence and small cubes....the cube setup also sounds acceptable to the hubbie when installed in their living room and we're done....

.....901's, now that I've experienced more modern day floor-standing models heard in surround, would have to be 8 in number, positioned correctly in BOTH ends of a room 12 by no more than say 20 feet, and have two stereo amps pushing two groups of 4 with two equalizers on the pre-amp and """STILL""", would not measure up to what we who read here have, in the dept of, "point"....and actually, a much better presence....could I build a Super Bose 901 setup for nostalgia's sake one day in The Throneroom?....maybe....but only after I completed my theater system, and that appears is going to be a never-ending endeavor......

....a report may still show up pertaining to 901 owners that tried a second equalizer....doesn't matter to me....they made a good move if they owned 901's and can't step up to better for awhile, that's all....I quit....night, all....

.....(Clint, just send that check for $5000 to the address I registered)....

Straight from a guy who still has a pair of Mindblowers in the rear deck of his Dodge Dart.

In a decent sized room, nothing can equal the Bose 901 loudspeaker. Everything else seems to have woomph woomph bass and overly brilliant tweeter-like highs.
Translation: "Nothing else sounds as good as a bell curve response that trims the highs, peaks the 5kHz I love and emphasizes boomy bass."

For what it's worth, the 901s are not cubes, but I'm starting to wonder why our forums are suddenly coming up all over the place on Google searches for Bose...

Can the admin put a word censor in that changed the word Bose to B0se (a 0 instead of an o) or something....that way google doesn't send the Bose people here? ;) ;) ;)

On the other hand, it might not be a bad thing. Maybe they'll come here and get some education on the product they were searching for!

Yeah - sending Bose people here would likely result in some much needed education. Most of our forum users seem to be kind to new and inexperienced people.

I think we need to educate these audiophytes on the benefits of NOT buying BOSE, and tell them better ways to spend their money. The more poeple we can convince that Bose just doesn't measure up the better.

No review can ever compare to the power of Word of Mouth advertising/criticizm.

I tried educating people a few years ago, but the overwhelming wave of ignorance and stupidity (that I call, the average mouth-breathing consumer) has left me naught but a bitter shell for humanity, unable to gather any joy about other peoples home entertainment, except for knowing their systems cost a fortune and sound like dog crap (even if the owners call it icecream). The Germans, a nation with a long history of jackassish behaviour, have even invented a word for my spiteful, pessimistic outlook: Schadenfreud. Armed with schadenfreud I now glady direct the drooling peons of the world to buy a Bose system, just so they will waste their money, and die happy never knowing that advertising has once again ruined thier lives and made all of their important decisions for them. Much the same as people buying Harley-Davidson motorcycles, or Rolex watches.

Suckers all of them.

I've noticed "Audioholics" come up all the time on google, for just about everything related to audio. I wonder if google sees all threads being linked to all topics. In any event, that's a good thing. The more this site comes up, the more mfg's should want to send their equipment here for reviews. I know Marantz and BIC/Acoustech desperately need some constructive criticism. There's little if no independant professional reviews anywhere on their recent stuff.

Oh no, now you've done it. I ride by these people all the time on my VTX. God bless-um.

I guess if someone thinks Bose sound good, that might explain why they think all that flappady-flappa-flappa sounds good.

my turn

I suppose I can chime in since I have had a recent (last 48 hours) run in with one of the "Bose Blind". In casual conversation with someone at work I mentioned I have been building a HT for some years and have made some progress as I see it. Immediatly he states "what, do you have a Bose system?". As calmly as I could I explained Bose is where some people start not where you end up. He looked puzzled but I did not have the heart to go further, only invited him to come take a listen then he will understand.. :D
Curt

I have Bose 701 Series II mains I have had for about 3 years and a VCS-10 Center I have had for about 5. I really don't have a lot to complain about them. They sound good. I am not an audiophile but I know what good sound is. I also know I cannot afford $20,000 to $30,000 and up for a state of the art "Stars Wars" home theatre with all the latest high end equipment.

When I went looking for new main speakers to replace my vintange Bose 601's I had for 22 years I looked at Bose, Klipsch, Energy, Polk and some others. I really like my Bose 601's but the speakers were going bad and I really had to replace, not rebuild them. Some of the speakers I listened to sounded really good compared to the Bose in the showroom but in some cases the speakers weren't set up with the same amp. I had the feeling that some places, like Good Guys, were intentionally making the Bose sound bad so they could push their Energy store brand speakers which cost more for the decent sounding ones. I would have to spend about $600 more to get an Energy that sounded better than the Bose. I picked the Bose because I got a good deal, at the time, (it was a Xmas sale, I know Bose doesn't haggle), and I had the option of returning them. Well, when I brought it home and hooked it up to my Yamaha the speakers really sounded good. I expected them to well, not sound as good as the others. My Yamaha RX-V2095 really does make mediocre speakers sing. I kept them and all my friends and family think my system rocks and sounds good. Of course, non are true audiophiles other then my brother-n-law and he also likes the sound.

The VCS-10 center speaker sounds realistic enough. I don't have alot to say about it either way other than I am satisfied and I have not heard anything so much better that I should spend more money to replace it. Same with the 701's.

I have been upgrading my system this year replacing my Bose AM-3 Series IV cubes I used as surrounds. They sounded less than satisfactory. I replaced them with Axiom M3ti bookshelf speakers. I finally added presence speakers to my system. I selected Axiom M2ti's for the presence speakers which Audioholics recommends in one of their reference Systems. I believe the $5k System. I considered the QS-8's which I could of had for another $200 but they really need to be mounted on a wall. My wife said no speakers mounted to the wall. For those of you familiar with QS-8's They are dipole speakers and really can't be mounted on a stand unless you buy the special Axiom stand. However, that stand only sits 36" off the ground. I wanted my surrounds to sit around 5 to 6 ft. So I compromised with the M3ti's for WAF.

I also replaced my Klispch KSW-12 with an SVS PB12-Plus/2 Sub. No complaints with this decision. The sub is a big improvement over the Klipsch.

I guess the bottom line is that speakers sound as good as the listener feels about them. With the right equipment any speaker can be made to sound good unless it is absolutely junk.

When it comes time to replace my Bose 701's and VCS-10's will I replace with Bose? Probably not. Bose does not make floor standers anymore other than the 901's. I will probably look at Axiom M60's or M80's for mains and a VP150 for center so that the timbre is matched. Or I may go to Paradigm. I will have to see. Whatever I do they will be the same brand to match timbre. That time is some time off unless the amp in the 701 fails.

Just my novice two cents.

Phil

I don't see any similarity and don't understand why you even brought that up. Bose are just speakers. Harley's are a lifestyle.

Don't forget I mentioned Rolex too. Anyway, These companies sell their products on pure, good 'ol fashioned marketing. Neither has any real claim to performance (in their respective industries), are of suspect design quality, and maintain their market superiority with a manufactured "mythos" that they are happy to supply to their customers (and more importantly, their will-be customers).
