Hello I am a newbie here and I have a question, I needed a subwoofer and didn’t know any better, so I bought a Bose AV3-2-1 subwoofer on eBay cheap. My question is can I use it with the HDMI converted into an RCA Jack? And plug it into my receiver? Any help from the fountains of knowledge is much appreciated!

No you can't. There is no such thing as HDMI to RCA conversion.

Bose plays with nothing except Bose. That unit is totally useless to you. Avoid Bose always.

Yes, there is. Technically, it's not legal, but they exist.

If you only bought the sub and didn't get the main unit, you won't be able to make direct connections easily.

A big problem is it’s not an hdmi connection, but more like a dvi, and it’s anybody’s guess as to what kind of processing goes on between the bass module and the entertainment control unit. Best I can tell, you bought a boat anchor. I’d sell it and buy a different unit although. How much did you pay? There are affordable options that will a) work with normal gear, and b) sound a lot better.

If you want a good cheap subwoofer get the Dayton 1200. I can atest it is a great deal for the money:
or this highly regarded by our member KEW:

That sub is not worth the time, effort or money to try to get it to work with a normal system. Cut your losses now and see if you can sell it. What kind of budget do you have for a sub? There are some relatively cheap models that will outperform anything made by Bose AND... will work with your system.

Pretty sure it’s not hdmi.
Yup. Me too. And like you said, who knows what kind of processing goes on between the module and control unit? +10 at 50 hz?? You never know. I can about guarantee it's a kerfuffle mess to try and get it to sound right.

Yes! A kerfuffle indeed!

Thanks, your right. When I looked I thought it was a HDMI, but its not. I won't use it.
I have a Bose surround, and when I seen it on eBay I thought it would work, but it won't.
I have an older Sony receiver and I am going to upgrade to a Yahama RXV485 BL. I never had a subwoofer and I viewed the very low price so I jumped on it.
I am also thinking of upgrading my Blu-ray. from a Phillipps to a Sony UBP-X800M2. Thanks for all your help!

Welcome to AH.

Hopefully this is an inexpensive lesson for you. Don't leap into the unknown without knowing what there is you are leaping into. ;)

A good place to start is figuring out exactly what you need. Which older Sony receiver do you have? Is it lacking in any features you'd like to explore? You have a Bose surround? Is it what you use now? If not, which speakers do you have in service right now? Are you looking for a sound upgrade, more modern connections or both?

OK, I don't want to bore anyone but I will start from the beginning. Last week I went to watch a DVD and had nothing but sound. I traced it down to a bad HDMI plug on the back of my Phillipps blu ray player. The receiver I use is a Sony STR DE 525. I have a Bose AM500 Acoustimass system, which is the base unit and 2 double cube speakers with 2 surround and I Video speakers. Now I need a new Blu ray player, but my receiver is so old, it is not compatible with anything new. I reached out to a friend when is definitely one of you guys here on this forum knowledge wise, he suggested upgrading to the Yahama receiver as it is 4K and Bluetooth and I could also listen to my music library from my phone. He told me not to buy the Bose subwoofer, but unfortunately I had put in an offer on eBay and it was accepted. So here I am on this forum asking questions if I could make it work, because I didn’t want to listen to the “I told you so” I knew would be coming. I am a Music lover and always have been. I was walking thru Costco and heard the Bose sound and was hooked. Now I know better, but the sound I get when listen to CD’s is fantastic! I am sure I don’t have an ear like most members on here, but it really sounds good to me. I would like to thank everyone here who took the time to reply to this thread!

I think you just need to expand your horizons so to speak....and a sound demo in a warehouse isn't a good place for an audition IMO. Nor is the Bose bass module an actual subwoofer. Depending on your budget there are a variety of decent subs as well as speakers we can suggest. Budget to work with would be key.

Well, you could always hide it in the garage and tell him you were able to cancel your bid... :p

You do sound in need of an update and a sound overhaul. The good news is, no matter what you end up with it'll be a nice step up from what you have. There are some nice receivers available and Yamaha is a good brand. Are you trying to cobble something together on a super tight budget or are you able to spend say, $1000 or more for a system? Speakers, receiver, sub and all.

Just to give you an idea what's on my mind...

HTIB = Home Theater In a Box. Kinda Bose's thing.

Altho HTIBs sometimes come with typical avr/speakers/sub, Onkyo particularly comes to mind, that can be interchanged/connected with normal gear. Not so much Bose.
