It is common knowledge that going separates with a cheap pre-pro/avr + powerful dedicated amp is better than AVR-only route.

However, I was wondering at what point does the best AVR, i.e. denon 5803/Yamaha Z11 shift the balance of power back to AVR-only's advantage.

Is the fact that Z11 can do 11 channels shift that balance? Would you rather have a Z11 stand-alone or a 663 mated with a 5/7 channel 250/w amp?

To me, the Z11 took the audio crown but Denon's the better VP with that Realta.

But.. I'll take a z11 off anybody that doesn't want it anymore :) It'll be a tax write off.. I promise to structure the transaction so it qualifies for a tax write off.

To me, the balance is shifted when the measured specifications clearly show that both the Z11 and 5308CI are superior than most separates:

YAMAHA RXV-Z11:
HQV 90/130, 20 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 0.0dB, THD 0.007%, SNR 107dB, Crosstalk -99dB, 387wpc @4 ohms.

DENON AVR-5308CI:
HQV 130/130, 20 Hz – 20 kHz +/-0.0dB, THD 0.004%, SNR 110dB, Crosstalk -92dB, 339wpc @4 ohms.

I mean even a $10,000 Lexicon MC-12 does NOT have the measured specs like the Z11 or 5308CI!

And how many separate amps can do 387 watts x 2ch @ 4 ohms like the Z11?
Too many separate amps cannot produce 387 watts RMS x 2ch @ 4ohms.

If Mark Levinson or Krell made a $100,000 300 lb receiver, somebody will buy it.

Will it sound better than a $1,000 Onkyo, Yahama, Denon, Pioneer, or HK receiver? Probably not. But somebody will buy it anyway.
For that receiver I would buy expensive, Teri-monster, platium plated connectors with double locks ,on expensive gold-plated cables to secure all my speaker connections because it would be a b*tch  to pull that cabinet in and out to trouble shoot connections. It would probably connect well to the new Bose 9,000,001 speaker system that has 100 speakers and each has 900 4 1/2" paper cones. for true direct/ reflection/collision/phase tromping sound. But what is best about the new Bose 9,000,001 speaker system is the PC wireless 802.11 connection that allows you to tune vai a PC with a googleplex of variations and parameters; you can tune forever and forever ,if you so desire. :D :D JOKE :D :D

The Green Faerie would consider this post gibberish and they would be correct!

Well, the one thing I cannot fault Mark Levinson & Krell is that their ultra-expensive components do have awesome measured specs.

this is only a 2 channel amp;

to name a few.

As you can see, there's lots out there. Question is, are you planning on welding sheetmetal with these or just listening to music/HT?

Well, I'm sure there are a lot of separate amps that can produce even more power than the Z11 & 5308, but there are also a lot of separate amps that cannot produce as much power as the Z11 & 5308.

Now name me a few preamps/pre-pros that can match or exceed the specs on the Z11, besides the Denon AVP-A1HDCI.:D

Think again. Denon has the Audyssey Multx w/ Deq and Dvol and can be unlocked for Pro version.
