If high SPLs are required, look at the Klipsch Palladium P-17s.
P-17 measured sensitivity was about 90.7dB/2.3v/m.

The KL650-THX (+/-1dB 200Hz-10kHz) measured sensitivity was about 92dB...also has better freq response than the $20K Palladium P-39 (94.8dB sen, +/-3dB 200Hz-10kHz). :D

I am beginning to think the KL650 is the most accurate (+/-1dB) speaker per sensitivity ratio. :D

I mean there are other accurate speakers, but none are as sensitive?

I don't think the OP is up for the KL650 due to size and appearance. That P-17 will hit pretty hard though, and look nice doing it. A three-way with compression tweeter and mid? That should be a pretty capable speaker.

Yeah, the P17 looks 100% better than KL650 for sure. Totally agree.

I'm just not after high SPL
I'm not either, really. :D

I hate THX reference levels because it sounds too loud for me. I always have to cover my ears during any kind of action scenes in THX-certified theaters. :)

ADTG: I hear ya, I think!

I recently saw that latest Star Wars movie (my first 3D viewing) in a state of the art theater. Compared to my HT, the sound track was so hard & brittle sounding as well as being over the top loud that it was not a very pleasant experience - it was a relief when it ended. While the low end was quite impressive I found that male vocals were quite chesty as well.

Overall a good movie though, although I'm not sure about 3D....

Yeah, every time I hear people say "I want my speakers to play THX Reference level" the first thing that pops into my mind is the incessant shrilling noise from the Star Wars films in THX auditoriums. :D

I recall having to rapidly cover my ears so they don't bleed.

Not the fondest memories. :D

So I've narrowed my choices to the following and I still need to actually hear two of the speakers:

B&W CM5
Sonus Faber Venere Model 1.5
Dynaudio X14
Focal Aria 906

You should seriously consider the following alternatives as they've been among the best sounding bookshelf speakers I've heard:

H

Hyperion

Audiophyte
CM5 is a very complete speaker in sound imho I listen to them everyday at work.
