Best 60" - 70" TV picture

I am looking for a 60" to 70" TV that offers the best quality picture. Willing to pay up to around $8,000.

Sound quality is unimportant, as I have a nice set of stereo speakers. I do not get into video games, don't own a Blue Ray, and am not going to hook a computer to it. I also don't have a surround system. I just want the best picture for the buck.

I purchased a 60" Pioneer KURO that was damaged, apparently in shipping. The replacement has a sound problem and the picture is too low on the screen. I know the picture is adjustible, but it should not come like that.

I was very disappointed, because I've read nothing but good reports about the KURO.

I've read some complimentary articles on the Sharp AQUOS.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Panasonic TH-65VX100U? I don't know the price. Features pseudo 96Hz to minimize flicker when displaying 24p Blu-Ray content properly.

Pansonic TC-P65V10 - They'll be available next month.

Panasonic TH-65PZ800U/Panasonic TH-65PZ850U

I've read some complimentary articles on the Sharp AQUOS.
Cool.

I've been looking at that Pany 850. Unfortunately, there's no place around here that has it in stock where I can view it. How does its picture compare with the 60" KURO.

I really like the KURO picture, but not the problems I've had.

Thx

Which pioneer do you have? I've never had a an issue with the picture not being alligned. You also mentioned that sound is not important. I can't recall the last time I've speced one with speakers but as you most have the sound handled separately.

I solved the alignment problem. It was pilot error, not the TV. The sound, however, is a problem. I've had it two weeks, and on two occasions the sound went dead while watching it. From time-to-time it would bleep on and off.

The second time it happened I reset the cable box, which solved the problem. Which would lead me to consider the problem to be with the box. However, this is the third TV I've had hooked up to the same setup, and the only one that has experienced this sound issue.

which pioneer do you have? From your descriptions it seems that other components are to be faulted for the errors you are having. QC is very good in the PDP department at pioneer.

You mentioned that you have external speakers and that picture is the most important thing. How do you have the sound routed in your system? I'm guessing that it's from the cable box to the TV and then from the TV to a receiver/amplifier. Are you connecting the cable box to this TV in a different way than with the other two TVs (in particular, are you using HDMI now when you weren't before)?

If you are now happy with the picture quality, can you directly connect the audio from the cable box to the receiver/amplifier?

$8,000 budget? Um, are there any Signature 141's left? No sound, it's a pro monitor.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still be more than happy with a 65" 850! :D

It is a PDP 6020 FD KURO.

At present, I'm using the speakers that came with the TV. I'm in the process of building new cabinets for the external speakers, so the hookup is just to and from the cable box.

Went to Best Buy today and viewed a Pany 65". Didn't notice the model, but was told it's about a year old. They also had a 09' Samsung PN63B590. They were across from one another, weren't hooked up the same, and were running two different movies.

The Pany has a very good picture, but I don't think it's quite as vivid as my KURO. Close, but not quite as good. And I don't know how it handles SD programs. On the KURO, some of the SD channels are nearly comparable to HD. I was stunned to see this.

The Samung's picture quality was as good as it gets. They must have put all the new technolog they could muster into it. But again, I don't know how it handles SD channels. If they do, I would buy it.

One other thing. When I looked for the serial number on this TV, I saw that the Manuf. date is June of 08'. Should this be a concern, or is it common?

It is likely that the Panny you saw was an PZ800, which is not able to be calibrated.... Where the PZ850 has all these options... Another thing here is that if you just walked into the BB they do not calibrate their TV's and just set them up from the box and turn them on, so its likely you didn't see the best picture - colors - brilliance from these tv's possible.

I had an opportunity to get a Pioneer 6020 or a 151 wholesale, but I didn't think they offered me that much more PQ over the Panasonic I had purchased.

Honestly the upper level Panasonic like the 65 PZ850 has a downright incredible picture, its blacks are not as black as the Pioneer's but it was more then acceptable to me after I went through tweaking the settings through calibration discs I have.

Keep in mind this plasma (panny PZ850 series) is also able to be calibrated by a professional, unlike the lesser series like the PZ800 at BB or even the Pio 6020. The Pio 141 and 151 are able to be calibrated, but there are less tweakable settings in the 151 then the 141.

When doing my decision making I really wanted that extra screen size for my large room, and I am completely satisfied with what it has to offer. If you aren't in a hurry, the next generation Panasonic 58 & 65" will be coming out toward the end of summer with better specs and deeper blacks, and with Pioneer out of the race for plasmas, that was another reason for my choice in Panasonic....

I do have some concern over the availability of replacement parts from Pioneer. They can say all they want about carrying them, but we know how that goes.

Who is we? And as I mentioned QC is top notch. Your more likely to get struck by lighting than have an issue before your ready for a new display. If you have doubts just get the panny. I'm still not sure why you are replacing the display you have. If you think it has a problem get tech out ;)

No question that the Pioneers are better, and I wouldn't be concerned too much with quality, but as the OP stated, he is less then thrilled with his experience with what he has gotten thus far... I have nothing against Pioneer, but I got 5 extra inches for less money.

I went with the Panasonic, as I have had great experience with them, this is my 3rd plasma....

The tech rep came out this afternoon and downloaded the latest something-or-other into the TV and told me that he has never had a repeat problem with the 6020 afterward. At 6:45 tonight it happened again. The sound went off, with intermittent bleepings of coming back on.

Looks like I got a bad one. As previously mentioned, this is the second 6020 I've had shipped to me. This one is a replacement of one that didn't work at all. No picture, no menu, just a loud irritating buzzing noise. I think it was roughed up in shipping.

This has been a miserable experience. As much as I like the picture, it looks like it's going to be a 63" Samsung or the Pany 65" for me.

That Samsung I saw at Best Buy had a great picture.

Thanks for the update, so sorry you have had such a difficult experience with you Pioneer Plasma's... It would turn me sour about the whole thing.

Good luck on your decision, keep us posted partner... Hang in there.

The tech rep returned this morning. To get the sound back on all he did was change from a high def to a standard def station. He said he has the same problem with a Samsung he's presently servicing. It sounds like it's the cable box, so I ordered another one today.

It's the same version of Scientific Atlanta - 8300 - that I have now, but mine is about 3 years old. They don't have an upgrade. Hopefully this will solve the problem. He said if it doesn't, I could solve the problem by replacing the HDMI cables with the old style, but it would affect the picture.

No way, Jose! Would send it back. But I'm confident this will work, otherwise the cable companies couldn't stay in business. They must be compatible with the latest TVs.

Will be 5 - 7 days. Will give an update.

Better late than never. Received and hooked up the new cable box. Same problem. Lost the sound last night. Took resetting the box to solve problem.

May be an incompatability situation. Have a call in for the technician who has been here twice. If he can't diagnose and solve the problem, I'm returning the TV. Tough to do because the picture is so good.
