Spoke with Neurologist today. There is slight damage to the lower left side of the brain. It seems to be nothing major, and new data has shown that many of us were born with head injuries. With this type of injury in an infant with an undeveloped brain, other parts of the brain attempt to take over the functions the damaged part would control. This type of injury in infants usually causes problems with the right side of the body, urination problems, BM problems, and feeding problems. At this moment, we have none of those problems. The seizures may still be occurring, they may not. The NICU Doctor, OBGYN, and Neurologist believe the seizures were due to the blood build-up at the injury site on the day of delivery. It is believed that as the injury heals, the seizures will subside, if they haven't already. It is hard for them visibly to tell if she is still having small seizures, and she can't be constantly connected to an EEG to test for this. As I mentioned, they all believe she is not having any. She is on the smallest dose of Phenobarbital now, and she only gets one oral dose in a 24 hour period. They plan to move her dose to a night time dose to help sleep when she gets home. They plan to try to get her home next week, and continue the Phenobarbital for 9 to 10 days. We will then go back for a check-up, and they feel she shouldn't need it any more.
