Questions about mid bass slam

I'm going to quote Harrison from AVS here. The question is, would the MFW-15's have an advantage with mid bass slam compared to say an Epic, Conquest, or an Ultra? Here's what he said:

"From my limited understanding/interpretation "slam" is the vibrations you feel in your chest, and sometimes the rest of your body as a result of air and soundwaves being pronounced enough for you to feel them happening. I think in the mid bass area, to really feel it, you need to have a woofer package that has the ability to stop quickly, giving you attack without residual decay.

From a frequency and quickness aspect, I would think any of the options mentioned here are capable of producing the effect, however the degree of the effect is variable based on excursion, surface area of the woofer, and volume of the port. I don't begin to venture a guess at that equation.

In my simple logic, 2 15's with even reasonable excursion should produce more effect than a single 18" but the MFW/Conquest equalizer is cabinet volume, which the conquest has in spades. Three is probably getting close if not tipping the scales.

The real question is that imagining that you did have three or even two, would you use the additional capacity or limit it based on comfortable listening volume. Only you can answer that. I can say watching action movies that ALL of what I listened to on Saturday scarred me with how powerful they were. The Tower, Conquest, and 4 MFW's would all knock stuff off the walls in my house."

That does sound like fun. Keep me posted! My issue is that in my main listening area, the room is approx. 16x16, which doesn't sound that large, but the vaulted seiling goes up about 14-15 feet. It also opens up into a huge kitchen that is nearly as large. So, it seems it is a bit of space to pressurize and I want to make sure I have enough sub. I'd rather have too much then not enough.

Heya Mike. We've actually shipped hundreds of subs - not handfuls It may seem like handfuls because of the huge backorder but currently, orders are being placed at nearly a 1:1 ration of shipping subs (so it looks like the never ending same backorder queue ). I checked this yesterday; the current backorder quantity is nearly identical to what was a month ago even though lots and lots of subs have shipped. That should get better soon as production has been increased quite a bit on the MFW front.

Also, we should be able to clear out the Cherry and Moho backorder in early May so not too long from now.

on a side note ... everyone seems to sing the MFW's praises and yet there are only a handful who actually has one. "things that make you go hmmm" i suggest you take them with a grain of salt lest you be immersed in too much hype.

if i had 1600 bucks right now and no other sub... i'd get the PB13 hands down, case closed, nuff said.

That is among the most ridiculous things I’ve heard in my life. Using 4 subs is an acoustic nightmare, and I’d bet a good sum of money you don’t have them placed properly to avoid cancellation. Unless you have a very large room and need multiple listening positions this makes little sense.

Its nice to see you guys here, but better yet, your also showing that you can be objective about your product compared to all the other offerings out there.

Good luck, and I hope that you guys can manage to ramp up production to provide a faster responce to your customers... It seems that many people are happy with your products, and Mark Seaton is a great asset in designing subs...

actually we were thinking avtalk / hometheatershack type of tests ... not necessarily them, but groundplane tests with the standard, FR, Power Compression, THD, Max output, etc. i would trust you guys even if you do these tests yourselves. last i checked audioholics was planning a standardized type of subwoofer tests, maybe you should submit your sub to them for testing (read: Mark Sanfilippo).

M Seaton told me that larger drivers don't necessarily have to be slower or less efficient. It all depends on driver design and amp. The big drivers can be quick.

Yeah, kinda.The reason I brought it up is because most of the bass in movie soundtracks appear in the mid bass region. I've been told that the MFW's really excel in the mid bass region and have god quickness as well as very good output in this area. So, just wondering if say the 13-Ultra or others perform as well in this area. i know for a fact that the Ultra and some others can go lower, but how 'bout that mid bass?

SheepStar will disagree but I still have my HSU MBM-12 that is a "Mid Bass Module" with an operating range of 50-150 Hz, a single stiff light weight 12" driver, and 350 watts of Amp. Does it work? Yes if you want some fast attack punchy mid bass. I used mine with a VTF-3 HO Turbo, and integration was simple - 16-50 Hz for the big boy, and 50-80 Hz handled by the MBM-12.

For music (my main reason I have a system), it kicked a** big time. Will I use it when my PB 13-Ultra arrives? Not at first, but all that could change with an Y adapter just for giggles .

Interesting ... The only subwoofer company which advertises on Home Theater Shack is SVS. Over half of the commercially available subwoofers tested on Home Theater Shack were SVS.

Based on your "logic", these tests are not to be trusted.
