Are These Finds Good Deals?

I visited a guy recently who had a few pairs of EPI speakers. The only ones I listened to were in his garage so it wasn’t an ideal place, but they for sure played loud and clear. They used single element crossovers, just a cap to the tweeter, for their 2-way speakers. Unlike Radio Shack, these guys knew what they were doing with that minimalist design. :p

You should give them a listen and offer your opinion. Price is more than fair for those.
So to summarize your thought: $400 is a reasonable price for the humanspeakers?? Thx...

He's only asking $300... it's quite a trek for me to go demo some speakers. That's more in your neck of the woods isn't it? It's in Mirage.

Okay, so I found these DefTech Mythos ST-Ls for $3k. That's $2k off what they retail for, but still overpriced, imo. I looked for measurements and found this at Sound & Vision.

Other than that 5 dB peak at 10 kHz it looks pretty good, but there's still a 5 dB peak... is that going to make it sound bright? Like to the point that it would be pretty noticeable? Is that poor design or intentional? BS specs aside (bass down to 14 hz ) the rest looks like it might sound pretty good. I'm just not sure how much that 5 dB boost at 10k hz would muck it up.
Here are higher resolution, anechoic measurements of the Mythos ST-L:

The 10kHz peak is real, but it's not quite as bad as shown in the Sound & Vision measurements. It's fairly narrow, so it shouldn't be too terrible - just a touch extra brilliance on high highs.

Having said that, people buying these speakers are paying a premium for their size (very narrow).

It's closer to me, but it's too far to just go listen, I'm not even sure i could get there on the bus, then i gotta figure out how to get them home.. I might ask for delivery , but that puts pressure on myself to buy ...Edit: $300 makes it more interesting though.. I like the look, but have any idea what they may sound like...

Krikey! Those things fall apart after 9000 Hz. Their graph is a little easier to read, but from 7500-9000Hz, that's still a +5dB peak. Get a little off-axis and it's not so intense...
But still, beyond being a lifestyle speaker, I wouldn't buy those at 1K. ;)

To be fair, now, those measurements don't really look all that bad, overall. But there are definitely items there one can throw stones at.

Another interesting find. Kef R101s for $950. Did a little homework on these and it seems they're fairly well regarded. Not the most impressive bass-wise but super linear from 90 hz and up.

At $500 they'd be a great deal( i think)... I think even at $950 they'd be a decent deal if you're long on coin... Me, not so much.. Those humanspeakers may be a wonderful deal as well, i wish i had evidence they were more Philharmonic type neutral than ascend type neutral..Edit: there's a pair of sierra 2 ex in tucson, the price is too high for me though...

Oh wow, I just saw them. $1300. Not bad, but not great. I paid $600 for my Sierra 2s.

What's the difference between Philharmonic neutral and Ascend neutral? Neutral is neutral, no?

The Kef are old ... a lot of technology since then ... were manufactured during 1979 through 1986

Yeah, I did a deep dive on them. I know they're pretty old. They were top of the line back then and some of the vintage guys go ga-ga over them. Not enough bass extension for me personally, but It'd be cool to check out what was top of the line compared to today. They look like they're in great shape.

No...neutral has many different sounds .. The ascends tend to be a bit treble forward...Dennis makes them more flat ...my guess is the phils are more like your il30s than the sierras, but with more detail... Pm Dennis sometime.. He's very familiar with Dave's work....

Sonus Faber Concertinos - though nice speakers, I am not really interested in them or the custom stands. The seller, though, has some interesting equipment (and no taste in decor).

The Concertinos speakers sold for $995 - $1195 based on finish about 20 years ago ... trying to force the stands with the speakers, seems to make it a weak deal for some people at $950 ... but maybe someone will bite
