You're finding some more esoteric speakers. I see a few out here too, but too rich for my blood!

$7k for these bad boys from Joseph Audio.

Some old school JBLs for $5k.

Interesting a stiminus sale brings the price down from $5000 to $4500 -- they use to list for $3400 a pair
I've been watching that places adds.. They cater to the ' ego' types... Guys who like to talk about how much they spend...i haven't seen a great deal in any of their adds..

Somebody on the Eastern Shore had a pair of B&W Matrix 801, the vintage "octagon" models, for $200. I thought that had to be a typo. Obviously wasn't, since the ad had been pulled in less than a day. Sorry I didn't get a screen shot. Even more sorry I didn't get the speakers.

At $200 they were worth a listen... Don't be surprised when they reappear at a much higher asking price...

Okay, so I found these DefTech Mythos ST-Ls for $3k. That's $2k off what they retail for, but still overpriced, imo. I looked for measurements and found this at Sound & Vision.

Other than that 5 dB peak at 10 kHz it looks pretty good, but there's still a 5 dB peak... is that going to make it sound bright? Like to the point that it would be pretty noticeable? Is that poor design or intentional? BS specs aside (bass down to 14 hz ) the rest looks like it might sound pretty good. I'm just not sure how much that 5 dB boost at 10k hz would muck it up.

Humanspeakers??

Interesting story behind them.

These were handmade by a former EPI employee who hand makes his own drivers, and assembles the speakers here in the US. These are a modern update of the EPI 100 speakers, legendary in their time as a great value, great sounding speaker.

I'm not familiar wth EPI but it does ring a bell. Anyone know anything about these?

Under 10 khz you should expect some brightness to some instruments and some ssszzz sounds to the singing voice ... it is still in the sensitive hearing area as it keeps rising from 5 khz with no dips ... 200 hz to 10 khz is a key area

If they cost 600 new they must be the model 81:

EPI speakers are nice equipment thqt’s kind of under the radar because it’s not a well-known vintage brand. More people have probably heard of Genesis though. Human Speakers still provides parts and repairs for EPI and Genesis, and they build their own models by hand.

Yeah, I spent about an hour on their site after I posted and got all caught up. Kinda cool that they still support all that vintage gear.

I visited a guy recently who had a few pairs of EPI speakers. The only ones I listened to were in his garage so it wasn’t an ideal place, but they for sure played loud and clear. They used single element crossovers, just a cap to the tweeter, for their 2-way speakers. Unlike Radio Shack, these guys knew what they were doing with that minimalist design. :p

You should give them a listen and offer your opinion. Price is more than fair for those.

I saw that too. Just a cap on the tweet so it doesn't blow. They let the woof just roll off to match. Cool and simple.

And that means a lot of work has to go into the woofer and tweeter design so that their natural roll-offs will meet well at the crossover point of the cap and still be in phase. ... a cap working with poor drivers can end up giving you a headache.

1st order XOs are "the best," as long as the drivers are suitable for carrying the weight they have to beyond the XO point. Every component you add takes away from potential power to the drivers. I used to think 4th order XOs were the sh!t and now I have a better understanding. 1st and 3rds have their own unique issues (slanted vertical responses) and now my goal is to work on doing 2nd order...
If you are able to get a flat summation at the XO point(s) while maintaining a smooth enough roll off avoiding the worst aspects of driver behavior, then you kind of get the best of both worlds.
Of course, better still would be no XO at all, but...
Has that ever been done? ;)

I saw those, they grabbed my eye, but I'm not very familiar with the history...
