He did? Edward I reigned from 1272 to 1307 yet it wasn't until 1707 that Scotland was finally united with England. Besides, I'd be a little wary of stating that the countries that comprise the U.K. are united just because history tells us it is so. The truth is not quite so clear cut.
Hey, Robbie,
Forgive my ignorance on contemporary life in Scotland - my knowledge is chiefly comprised of watching Braveheart and Trainspotting - probably not a very accurate view of things. Seriously, though, I've come to the understanding that relations between the Scots and English were always a bit strained, although with fairly good-humored ribbing now and then. BTW, my ancestors left England in the 1620s, so I don't bear any English guilt for subjugating Scotland.

Subjugating. Hmm, perhaps not the best word to have used, :D and I doubt the English feel any guilt either.

Was your post asking how stands the relationship between Scotland and England at present?

Yes - it's always been an interest of mine to visit the UK. Over here, we've had a lot of coverage on the Irish slant on relations with England, but not the English/Scot situation. I'd be interested to see how the attitude between England and the other UK countries has shaken out after all these years. I'm guessing it's a little like the various regional rivalries in the U.S.

You could write a book on the subject but failing that...

It's a difficult question to answer because there're so many differing opinions, some well informed, some not. It all depends on who you ask. Overall the relationship is fine, but an undercurrent of nationalism tends to rear its head from time to time. Just...don't call Britain 'England'. ;)

Always remember that America, policy disagreement or not, is the world's largest humanitarian and financial provider, bar none.
