My father in-law died yesterday. We only found out he was ill on Monday and my wife was not able to get to Scotland before he passed. They did not want to tell her until she got there today. He had pain in his side only two weeks ago and was found to be full of cancer. He never showed a symptom before the pain. Her mom didn't want to tell us until they knew what they were dealing with but he and went downhill so fast that when they told us on Monday they did not think he would make the week.
I am still in shock that he went so fast. I feel so fortunate that I was able to spend a few weeks with him this past summer. He died peacefully without pain with his wife and some of his kids by his side. At only sixty it does not seem possible. I have spent the day working to try and stay busy and keep a brave face in front of our five year old. Now she has gone to sleep I have more time to reflect. He was a kind man who did so much for my wife and I. I wish I could be there with them but due to our young one and financial reasons I cannot go as well.
I would ask you all to raise your glass and toast to Ian. A father, friend, husband and an outright great human being. Ian I love you and I will miss you.
Thanks for giving me a place to help deal with my grief.
