75 Samsung or 80 Vizio

I'm pretty much over my DLP. I finally got the wife onboard. I've been waiting because if you're married and your wife doesn't care about TV's... you know it's just not worth the battle nor the punishment of having to go to the jewelry store. But now she watches a shows like Game of Thrones and she's excited about a new display.

I missed when Samsung 75" 6350 went on sale at SAMs for $1,948. It's back at $2,499 everywhere and I can't stomach paying $500 more when I know what I could have got it for so I'm just watching the prices to wait for it drop again. I'm also thinking about Vizio 80's. I'm trying ignore my snobbery which keeps me from buying that brand. I know they've come a long way, but I'm leaning towards the SAMSUNG.

One thing is, the SAMSUNG has the HBO to GO app on the TV. This makes it much easier for the wife. Right now, she does it through the Apple TV, but it usually results in me having to help her... don't ask.

Most times she runs it on her iPad and just AirPlays it.

Anyway... thoughts and suggestions. She's also pushing the 4K thing for some reason and thinks sticking with 65' or going to 60" is fine... again... don't ask. 70" just isn't a big enough jump... 80" is almost too big for our setup which is why the 75 seems perfect. I'm just not going to pay $2,498 when I know it was $500 cheaper a few weeks ago... just out of principle.

Try and do a side by side comparison if and only if both displays have been calibrated. I'm thinking the Sammy is the "safer" brand but I honestly had no problems with my Vizio despite having water pour thru it during a Mother's Day accident. The new Vizios have definately stepped it up in black levels with accurate color never having been a problem.

Initial reviews on the Vizio were lackluster due to overprocessing the image. They did fix with a firmware update, so I was starting to consider it.

I went to 3 brick and mortar retailers who have had nothing but bad things to say about the TVs (i.e. amount of returns), so I decided against it. That and the fact the overwhelming negative feedback on their support made me stay away. I have read that their M seices TVs have received very positive reviews. This was the P Sereies.

Not that Samsung or any other provider is that much better, but if it were me, I would go with Samsung.

In my case however I have always used Sony TVs and have never had an issue. I experimented and picked up an LG for my bedroom and after that experience I will stick with Sony.

It helped that my Dealer got me the XBR65X850B for 2k. I have two XBRs the XBR4 in the family room 2008 (LCD not LED) is still going strong and has a great picture. The XBR929 I have from 2011 is in the same boat. I will stick with what I know

The 4K (P series) Vizio seem to have poor picture quality and their reliability seems to be worse than there M/E
series counterparts.

I would go with Samsung or Sony as you cant go wrong with them. I would avoid 4k as you are paying more for no benefit at all imo. 4k might come some day more popular, but who knows when.. And 1080p is still plenty.

Having worked in the service industry for many years I can say that I'm scared to buy a Samsung. I am not convinced that they make quality products. I have just seen too many crazy issues.

With that said, I just bo ugh a Vizio M series and I am very happy with it. I'm a plasma guy and I own two Panasonic plasmas and I have no complaints with the image quality. In fact, it out performs my 42" Panasonic in contrast and black levels.

I have not seen any significant issues with Vizio on the service side. Although for the price I wouldn't be too upset if it died in a few years.

Every-time that I look at TV's I always notice 1 thing about the Samsung's that I don't like. The heat that they give off and how hot the frame is compared to a lot of other TV's. That's why I personally stay away from Samsung. Always been told that heat and electronics don't usually go together to good. Sony or LG for me.... personally that is. I would also go as big as she will let ya.

I bought the 26" Used for $600 and the 52" New for $2300. That gives you an idea of the age on these LCDs from Sammy, I think the 26" is pushing 10 years old at this point and probably 8 on the 52".

Never a problem!

They do run a little on the warm side if you put your hand on it though.

And my Vizio has been through a dunk tank and is still alive and kicking. Bought in 2007/8

My 10yr old Samsung LCD TV recently went out. Started getting block of dark screen. I was able to push on the edges of the screen to make them go away. It was apparently not an uncommon problem. I just picked up a 60" Vizio LCD tv and couldn't be happier with the picture. It was a big improvement from the older LCD Sammy.

The Vizio came with a caveat. I had my router located behind the TV so I could wire directly to my streaming devices (Including the new smart Vizio). To make a long story short, when the new TV was on the wireless speed in my house would drop to a snails pace. Also when watching TV through the antenna the lip sync would randomly go astray. This would not happen while streaming content.

I tried Googling this, and while I found people who postulated that some interference between the two could happen, I never found a case of anybody actually having a problem.

The Sammy in the same place/setup didn't do this. Not sure if it's where certain electronics in the Vizio are in respect to the router or if the Vizio just isn't shielded. Either way, relocated the router and all is well.

I just got my Sony XBR65X850B 4k. Got it for $1900 because it was a very slightly distressed box, but still new in box. Screen was defective so my Dealer is getting a Brand new one from Sony.

Made me realize one thing, if you want 3D you are pretty SOL if you go with a 2014 model Vizio as they have dropped 3D on most of their line.

I know 3D is not a big deal to pretty much everyone but a few, like me

I like my Marvel Blu-Ray's in 3d and the Passive 3D on the New Sony is excellent compared to the Active on my XBR920 1080p

I have seen the M Series Vizio however and have to admit that the picture is very good.

Right now Samsung is 2300 on amazon with $50 money back - effectively making it $2250
I would try to contact few big resellers like Adorama and Onecall to match Amazon price.
If they do - you save on sales tax making it equivalent of $2162 (pre-tax) only $150 than you'd pay at Sams Club during the sale

Or just set email alert on CamelCamelCamel or Traktor and wait for your price

That was my thought, and why I'm not quite ready to buy into 4k yet. At this point I'm not sure if it's going to be a niche market or what... I remember buying a $300+ Pioneer Elite DVD player back in the 90's. By the time there was a decent selection of DVDs to buy or rent, you could get a better DVD player for well under a hundred buck. When Blu ray came out I waited for them to become mainstream with no regret.

Having worked for Sony, and then working for a company that supplies them components, it's really hard to beat their quality. Them, and Panasonic, are ferocious!

To be honest, if I am going to buy a TV, I will bite the bullet and buy it from a local dealer and pay tax. Like I stated in my earlier post, my TV had an issue, my dealer is picking it up from my house and replacing it, I don't even have to repack it. That hassle free return is worth the tax!

Other way around. Il and bunch of other states forced sales tax first. Amazon reacted by building local distribution centers to improve delivery times and better costs control and using state tax breaks for creating local jobs

Actually Illinois fought Amazon on Sales Tax and lost. Amazon supported Internet Dealer Act that online e-tailers collect tax

I don't fully trust this article as it doesn't make any sense. Look up on Illinois "amazon tax" law. Thou it was originally strike down, a new revised version is in effect since beginning 2015 and Amazon would have to start collecting taxes any way. Building new distribution center is just a way for them to save money and stay competitive. Wikipedia has a decent article on Amazon tax.
