Interesting the Yamaha Rx A770 says it supports Atmos?

Yes, the basic 7.1 setting will work. You will connect the ceiling speakers to the ZONE 2/F. PRESENCE speaker terminals. Do not connect anything to the SURROUND BACK/BI-AMP speaker terminals.

In your settings, set SURROUND BACK speakers at NONE. Set the FRONT PRESENCE speakers at SMALL. In the layout setting, make sure the SURROUND speakers are set to REAR, not FRONT. They allow for placement of SURROUND speakers up front if they cannot be placed in the conventional surround location.

Change the FRONT PRESENCE location setting based on the speaker placement. If they are going into the ceiling as stated, select OVERHEAD instead of FRONT HEIGHT or DOLBY ENABLED SP.

Very helpful thank you. But just to be clear the ceiling speakers I am putting in are going in the rear above the seating area. Do I still connect them to the zone 2 Front presence speaker terminals?

Yes. The SURROUND BACK terminals are for a 7.1 setup with ear level SURROUND BACK speakers. You are running a 5.1.2 setup with 5 ear level speakers and 2 ceiling mounted HEIGHT/PRESENCE speakers. So, they need to be connected to the ZONE 2/F. PRESENCE terminals and the location setting for them should be set to OVERHEAD.

Other makes and models have height speaker location settings that include top(ceiling) front, top(ceiling) middle and top(ceiling) rear but the A850 has only OVERHEAD for ceiling mounted HEIGHT/PRESENCE speakers. That would be the appropriate setting in your case.

To the op make sure you have the speakers in the correct placements as possible. The best place is the Dolby atmos for home theater guidelines pdf file and focus on the angles of the placements. Some of the pictures on the diagrams can be misleading.

Different rooms will have different layouts and obstacles to contend with but getting the speakers in the ballpark will work.
