Have you tried the TV apps to see what it puts out to the receiver?

Yes I went to the tv setting selected DD plus, then went to the TVs you tube app and played a video and no sound.

If I turn off the AVR and play sound from the tv speaker and turn on DD plus and go into the tv apps and play something I do get
Sound.

I did upgrade my basement receiver and living room to 4K/Atmos receivers. Not sure that I’ll hear a difference in sound since I don’t use blue ray

Very cool. That model supports HDR10. So, any Dolby Vision and HDR10+ material will get to the TV using HDR10 from the Yamaha as it is the default HDR format and is supported by all services. If running 5.1 in each room, the Yamaha will not make use of atmos metadata. DD+/Atmos tracks will appear simply as DD+ without the use of Surround Back or Front Presence(Height) speakers. If you see DD+/Atmos while streaming, the speaker configuration is not correct for the 5.1 layout. Make sure Power Amp Assign is set at Basic. Then, check the Configuration and make sure the Surround Back and Front Presence speakers are set at None.

So why will it not make use of Atmos for 5.1? I do plan on adding presence rear in the basement.

Once presence or surround back speakers are put in the mix, atmos metadata will be put in the mix.

5.1 is not Dolby atmos in the first place. Dolby atmos requires height speakers. 5.1.2 is atmos while 5.1 is not and will not ever atmos

Dolby Atmos metadata is contained in a Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 track(Streaming) or a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track(Blu-ray) for home use. Configuring this particular receiver for 5.1 speakers means atmos metadata is not processed. This results in a signal indication of DD+ or DTHD tracks instead of DD+/Atmos or DTHD/Atmos tracks.

Newer Yamaha models contain Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization. When virtual height speakers are turned on using a 5.1 configuration, atmos metadata is processed and tracks are displayed accordingly as DD+/Atmos or DTHD/Atmos. Configuration of 7.1 would also result in atmos metadata being processed without the use of physical or virtual height speakers.

Devices using Dolby MAT, such as the Apple TV 4K and XBOX Series X, will display PCM/Atmos as the Dolby signal is decoded and sent out as LPCM with atmos metadata attached to it. Using this particular receiver in 5.1 mode, PCM would be displayed using one of these devices while playing an atmos track.

Different receivers have different options available for Dolby Atmos Height speaker placement. This particular receiver has options for front presence(on front wall high above front speakers), front dolby enabled speaker(module placed on top of front speakers) and overhead(on ceiling centered in room.)

I should have done some more research because I guess the Rx A850 doesn’t have virtual height setting. No big deal. I’ll be adding height speakers in the basement.
I thought I read for the A850 you can run zone 2 off hdmi? If that’s the case I’m looking forward to that rather than running zone 2 off analog like my old receiver.

It seems HDMI connected device audio cannot be sent to Zone 2 and analog connections are necessary for Zone 2 output.

Interesting, I thought I read you could use HDMI for zone two and if you did the surround the back would not be available

Just doesn’t look like HDMI is available for Zone 2. Losing Surround Back is normal when powering Zone 2 with internal amps as there are only seven amps and something has to go when powering Zone 2.

I am adding 2 ceiling speakers. Do I select 7.1 and turn on surround back on the receiver?

Ceiling speakers should only be used for Dolby atmos and dts x. Your receiver doesn't support it.
I do not support using ceiling speakers for any other purposes.

Yes, the basic 7.1 setting will work. You will connect the ceiling speakers to the ZONE 2/F. PRESENCE speaker terminals. Do not connect anything to the SURROUND BACK/BI-AMP speaker terminals.

In your settings, set SURROUND BACK speakers at NONE. Set the FRONT PRESENCE speakers at SMALL. In the layout setting, make sure the SURROUND speakers are set to REAR, not FRONT. They allow for placement of SURROUND speakers up front if they cannot be placed in the conventional surround location.

Change the FRONT PRESENCE location setting based on the speaker placement. If they are going into the ceiling as stated, select OVERHEAD instead of FRONT HEIGHT or DOLBY ENABLED SP.
