Oh dear, I bet SONY is all over this. First, they take over movie disc production for Disney (and probably other studios later). Then they use this new fancy new disc. :D
Sounds exactly like something Sony would do.

"Oh look a new format! It's superior... because reasons. Just buy it."

They could bring MD back with 62 TB capacity!!! ;)

But what will read it? Presumably that means new players with the laser mechanism to read the layers properly.

Exactly.

Granted, with that capacity, I doubt this format would have ever been used for consumer storage. This has enterprise backup medium written all over it.

But if Sony could get the price down, you bet they'd try to switch to a new format.

Just like when 4k blu-ray came out and existing BD readers in PCs couldn't read them. It makes sense considering it's a new format...sort of, but still frustrating. I'm sure consumer players had the same issue. I haven't used one in many years.

Your CD, Move Disc Library is about to get a whole lot better.

Massive 1 Petabit Super DVD.

Surprised AH website hadn't mention this.
Haha, yeah unfortunately this won’t be hitting normal consumer market anytime soon. Have to get every studio to use 100gig discs first, before we make the giant leap to this super DVD. Those super discs would probably cost $500+ per movie! :p

Disney is still putting massive movies 2.5-3 hours long on 66gig discs. Yet, Arrow, Kino and others are putting classics on 100gig. Hopefully Sony taking over something things will use 100gig for everything.:D

It does not seem intended for consumers for sure. I am curious what format movie theaters get digital films in these days? Are they fully digital download or are they sent a disc, USB, DAT?

I know they used to be disc based, but no clue on the format.

I think they come on HDD/SDD now, again, not sure of the format.

Some are still film too. Not many though.

I'm going to have to look it up now.

EDIT: found this

The Crow (2024, Lionsgate) reboot is releasing June 2024. Written by the guy who wrote “Gran Turismo 2023”, which I like a lot. Directed by the guy who directed “Ghost in the Shell 2017” and “Snow White and the Huntsman”, which I also like a lot.

Hopefully shot in 4-8K digital camera and ATMOS.

Interested in the Crow reboot, but that's a hard one to really get right. Even Alex Proyas, the director of the first film said he doesn't think they should remake it because it is disrespectful to Brandon Lee's memory.

I already preordered the 30th anniversary 4K steelbook release of The Crow. Saw it on Friday the 13th, opening night. Oddly, it is now not available to preorder on Amazon, only the regular version.

Walmart is releasing a special Crow 4K steelbook as well. It’s actually pretty badass looking.

I will hold judgement until it comes out. But that writer director combo is absolutely terrible. All three of those movies bombed at the box office. Not sure I’d want scrubs like that doing a reboot of a movie that was/is a huge cult classic. I feel like James Wan would’ve been a good choice for this franchise. maybe Shawn Levy or Todd Phillips? :)

The Writer of the new TRON Ares 2024 is also one of the screenplay writers for the new Crow 2024, so hopefully he’s good. :D

The director of TRON Ares also directed Maleficent 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales. So who knows. Hope for the best in both Crow 2024 and TRON 2024.

BTW, TRON Ares is shot using the RED Raptor 8K digital camera, so it will look great. :D

I wonder how some directors get picked for projects. I'd be curious to know that process. The guy for the new Tron movie seems to be legit. Two Disney movies under his belt. Both were big budget films and I believe both got well over $100 million globally at the box office.

I try and hold judgement when I see directors or writers of crappy movies get the shot at bigger budget movies or cult classic movies. May these movies will be their "breakout" films. Joseph Krasinski had only done a music video previous to directing Tron: Legacy and look how that turned out. Now's he's and in-demand director who has a movie that went over $1.4 billion at the box office.

I always look at Martin Campbell as a good example. He was a TV show type director, then gets Goldeneye as his first big movie and directs a brand new Bond with Pierce Brosnan. And that movie killed it at the box office and is one of the best Bond movies there is. Then follows it up with Mask of Zorro. Which was a pretty solid movie. But then goes quiet for a while making some action movies and other stuff that you'll forget about. But then comes back and makes ANOTHER all-time Bond movie with Casino Royal. Then after that success makes a low budget Mel Gibson movie that was alright but then makes a HUGE bomb with Green Lantern. Ever since then, the only thing of note is he directed The Foreigner. Which is pretty solid movie, but no major box office since Casino Royal in 2006. :D

Looks like there are more things included in the Amazon one, but the Walmart one did look interesting too.

Just saw Dune 2. I'm giving it a perfect 10/10.

My local theater has faux-IMAX. I believe the screen is 1.90 aspect ratio. They do have Dolby Atmos in it, but the projector is 2k. I would like to see this movie with a true 4k projector.

The sound quality was excellent. This movie on physical will most likely be a demo disc to show off to friends and family. Since theaters are capped with how much bass output is allowed, I was pleasantly surprised my theater must've cranked it to 11. I don't recall other movies in this specific theater being that boomy before. I know bass heads are going to have fun with this physical disc. :D :p

This is the type of movie that NEEDS to be seen on a giant screen. If you have the opportunity, get out and see it! :D

@Movie2099 , I have to settle for DUNE 2 to be on one of those TV movie apps and listen on 5.1. DANG! Been that way for 3 years.

Wow. 10/10?

I think the only SciFi movie I've ever given a 10/10 was "Edge of Tomorrow". :D

But don't use the word "boomy" bass since audiophiles will think that's bad (not tight) bass. :D

And even if Dune-2 is 10/10, it will never even get nominated for Oscars Best Picture. Those dumb a$$ Oscar people are prejudiced against SciFi. :D

It's a rarity for me to dish out 10's. So If I ever put 10/10 it has be one of THE best. Dune 2 hit that mark. Directing, writing, producing, cinematography, acting, etc... They were all top notch.

Edge of Tomorrow was a really good movie, but it's a solid 9/10 for me.

I wouldn't want to upset audiophiles.... hahaha :p

You are correct, the Oscars are dumb. I stopped watching a decade ago. Dune 2 will get nominated for all the other stuff outside of Actors, best picture and probably Director.

Sci-fi in today's landscape is very hard to break through. I love Denis V's work. I have thoroughly enjoyed every single movie he's directed. Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, Prisoners, Dune 1&2 and Arrival. I still have to check out Enemy and Incendies.

Oh now I have great expectations for Dune-2. Anything less will be disappointing. :D

Haha - I started watching "Enemies" last night. Already have "Incendies" lined up to watch next. :D
