    First ever CD

In a similar vein to lost and found albums... I used to listen to Pat Benatar's Wide awake in dreamland on tape. The tape and I eventually separated  but I never forgot about it (man this is sounding more like a mushy film all the time :D). Then, years later, I walked into a second...

Once again: what are you listening to now?

As I type these words I am listening to Leftfield's Leftism. This album was waaay before its time and still sounds brand new today. What a superb album this is!

    Bitstream And Pcm

Yes! :D Presumably, it's at this point that it can make a (small/big?) difference which, between the receiver and player, has the better DAC?

    Bitstream And Pcm

So the difference is one of decoding. The receiver must have PCM before it can convert digital data to analogue and amplify it. With Bitstream the receiver does the decoding and with PCM the player does the decoding. Is this correct (I've seen plenty of these threads and I still get confused)?

    First ever CD

Oops. :D It was Pyromania I was thinking of (it was Hysteria that I'd bought; I bought Pyromania later).
  6. Buckle-meister

    First ever CD

Well that would explain why it was in number 1 before Hysteria shot up to number 2. Now wouldn't it? :D
  7. Buckle-meister

    First ever CD

I'm fairly sure it was during the time of Thriller that I was heavily into Def Leppard. I still consider Hysteria to be an excellent album. If memory serves, it stayed in the US number 2 slot in the album charts, prevented from number 1 only by Thriller.

    First ever CD

Is this not just superb?! :D :) I totally agree. I'm in exactly the same boat. :) What?! You mean you don't enjoy listening to songs about how your wife's leaving you for your sister's cousin's father, who also is your brother? :D

    Pure Malt speakers

Ahhhh. I posted in the original so-called 'Pure malt' speakers thread too. ;)

    Pure Malt speakers

You mean "single malt whisk(e)y". 'Scotch': Must be distilled at a Scottish distillery from water and malted barley, to which only other whole grains may be added, have been processed at that distillery into a mash, converted to a fermentable substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems, and...

    First ever CD

Strictly speaking, you can place anything from any of the other forums in The Steam Vent. In truth I did consider posting in the Musical Goodness forum but didn't think it applicable since it's not about new music per se. My 'skirt' is the right length. :)

    First ever CD

That was my first tape. I had a Matsui boom-box. :D

    Low speaker impedance

Does low impedance actually make a loud speaker sound worse than if the impedance was higher, or is it just that the speaker is harder to drive but that it makes no audible difference to sound quality?
  14. Buckle-meister

    Low speaker impedance

You say that budget speakers are generally more likely to have a high impedance than high-end speakers even though the latter may be high-impedance - which presumably is a good quality to have if possible. Is this correct? Because from my side, I've owned both budget and good quality...

    Low speaker impedance

Hmm. Your explanation is certainly logical, but it doesn't corresspond to my personal experiance or to speakers I've read about in threads. The flagship speakers by both Mission and B&W, for example, are 8 Ohme impedance. Sleestak's Epiphany 12-12s are also 8 Ohme impedance. All these...

    GWB: The socialist liberal extraordinaire

Quite a mild dislike then. :D

    First ever CD

Dear all, I thought it might be interesting to see what the first CD you ever bought was - if you can remember, that is - and if there's any story that accompanies it. My first CD was the motion picture soundtrack to Flashdance (even though I hadn't yet seen the film). :D I have to...
  18. Buckle-meister

    Low speaker impedance

Dear all, I'm sure you can point out alternative examples but it seems to me, going by threads I've seen, that the impedance of many American manufactured speakers is 4 or 6 Ohmes. I've yet to come across a British speaker that isn't 8 Ohmes. If I'm not just imagining this and there is a...

    Cool photos

;) When I was 'up there' I was simply awed by the sheer scale of folding of the hills in the Lochaber region, which is not my usual haunt. When I returned to earth (:D) and downloaded my photos I didn't consider myself to have any real beauties (this is 'big country' and as such can be...

    Cool photos

Thank you very much Adam. ;) But as I wrote to Jaxvon earlier, the photos, no matter how good, can never do justice to the feeling of actually being up at height in the middle of nowhere with nothing but hills in every direction for as far as the eye can see.
