    Just got a Carver amplifier!

Wow, that's a pretty good price! I never see them sell for much under $450 or so. I have a Carver a400 that I still use to power my subwoofers.

Racially Motivated Attack? Is the media biased?

It's that common abuse of the law that especially worries me. Like the case where the 5 black guys rape & kill a white guy, cut his penis off, then rape & fill his white girlfriend and light her on fire- and it's not a hate crime! But 2 guys beat a gay guy to death while calling him a 'faggot'...

    Cable confession

I am ashamed to admit that if I was rich I'd probably buy Nordost Vhallhalla, too.:o They just look so freakin' cool, and it would be fun to see people sputter and stammer when I told 'em what they cost!:D

What receiver would you buy for <$3000?

Even buying new that's doable. If you're willing to buy used then you could get something pretty darned nice for that money. Of course, I currently have a Denon AVR-3805, and while I wouldn't mind upgrading I don't feel much need to. Eventually if BluRay and/or HD-DVD really take off I might...

Outlaw gets into making home speakers.

I don't think he's talking about making & selling speakers, Tex-amp, just DIY'ing his own. Obviously not everyone has the skills, knowledge or inclination to build their own but there are some very very fine DIY efforts out there. I don't want to criticize the Outlaw speakers without hearing...

What receiver would you buy for <$3000?

For $3,ooo I'd maybe go with an amp & pre/pro. But for a receiver I'd go for the Denon AVR-4306.

Racially Motivated Attack? Is the media biased?

Why is it any worse to kill someone because you don't like blacks or gays than because they cut you off in traffic? Murder is almost by definition a "hate crime". I think it's an artificial distinction that makes our system of loss less fair and equitable than before.

Kudos to this forum from audiophile wannabe

Welcome to the forums, jpaget! Sounds like your experience was ideal. I often council people that you can often get better gear by buying used, so long as some care is taken and you can accept a little risk. Bare wire is just fine. I prefer banana plugs, but the main advantage of using...

    Need a 2 channel amp-help please

Probably his speakers aren't making any sound.;) I myself have noticed that preamps don't seem to drive speakers very well without a power amp.:D

    Need a 2 channel amp-help please

Amps definately can have problems as they age. Caps don't last forever and all things made by man can wear out. I have a Carver a400X that I use to power my subs and it's worked fine (I bought it new in the mid to late 90s) but my 2nd identical amp flaked on me a few years ago. Old Carvers...

My system sounds bright. Need help!!!

That's a classic recipe for bright sound! The Athena's are on the 'lively' side as it is, and pairing them with the Yamaha in a very live room will definately sound a bit tipped up. Bpape from GIK can definately offer you more expert advice than I can, but as a general rule placing room...

    Epson Home Cinema 1080

From the scuttlebutt at AVS, it sounds like the Panny may be plagued with some of the QC problems that the A100X has. Personally I've freakin' had it with MIR, too. Panny is apparently taking well over 3 months to send the check in some cases! My experience with MIR is that they do...

    Surround quality question

I've yet to hear the Onix towers, but based on my experience with bookshelves vs floorstanders I'd say it's probably worthwhile to get the towers. If you get the bookshelves you'll still need to buy stands, so the cost difference isn't going to be that great. The floorstander will have better...

Suprise!, high end dvd players $thousands are now rip-offs in terms of quality/price

While there's an "apples-to-oranges" element of this analysis, I somewhat agree that extremely expensive DVD players don't make much sense anymore. But I think cheap players like those from Oppo are as responsible as HTPC for this. Face it, not everyone can live with an HTPC. The OS can be...

want great sound, but don't have a lot of $

Well, I'd better be careful what I say about it in case Mtrycrafts is around.;) :D I think it sounds wonderful! Eventually I'd like go get a TDB-2250, too.

want great sound, but don't have a lot of $

Yeah, part of why I sold my Onix was the lack of remote. You really get used to being able to adjust the volume at least. When I find another one I'll use it to replace my NAD in the PC rig- no need for remote with the amp 2 feet away.:D I agree that $3k isn't exactly a PJ for the masses...

Racially Motivated Attack? Is the media biased?

I think the term "hate crime" is a socially damaging and dangerous fiction. To create a more serious catagory of severity and punishment for a crime deemed to fit some arbitrary profile is demeaning and insulting to victims of and families of the victims of "random crimes" or thrill killings...

    Denon AVR-2307CI Receiver Review

That may well be. I've used the OSD for setup stuff, not much else. But I'm thinking the other stuff works, too. Not positive though. Personally I always turned off all the OSD except for when making adjustments- I find it annoying to have the "mute" GUI pop up when I mute. I really like...

want great sound, but don't have a lot of $

Yeah, I like the minimalist design/look. Very utilitarian. There's a place for flashy (eg the Onix SP3 or my Butler TDB-3150...love the blue tube glow!:D ) but the NAD is pure form following function. Never listened to any Cambridge products. But I've heard nothing but good about them.
