    20 amp dedicated circuit question

20 amps for a music-only gear or HT? You must have a pretty powerful amp in your set-up to consume around 2kva of power. :D And to crank it up to extract so much power. If you do, then it's always recommended to have a dedicated power line to serve such powerful beasts. Good luck.

    The “Sound” of receivers…

I am not surprised with such a response, typical of many myopic scientists who cannot see anything beyond their real noses. It is people like these who should expand beyond their limited scientific confines hiding behind some ceremonious scientific methodology that can only speculate based on...

    Shopping for a Subwoofer...

Ofcourse, you get what you pay for. Up to a point, beyond which the law of diminishing returns apply. Or even zero returns. And finding out at what point that is is entirely up to your own personal value judgement.

    Shopping for a Subwoofer...

Well so are you. And I didn't know you have to have a degree to opine in this forum. But to list down my academic degrees would be stooping down to your curiosity that I find less than appealing or worthwile to indulge in.

    Five subs?

Yup. That's entirely possible. Commendable? Am not so convinced. Since you already have a proper sub, doesn't the bass management features in your player or receiver take care of the bass requirements for SACD/DVD-A? Those speaker towers with built-in subs are rather fashionable these...

    Recorded CD sound quality

You may be right, I'm no digital expert to either agree or not. My thoughts were purely a product of a mental exercise that goes this way: If there are 5 instruments playing with varying degress of loudness as is often the case in pop, there will be moments when some or most of the...

    DVD audio to CD

I also have Cool Edit Pro, though I didn't find it any more user friendly than Goldwave. But I'll defer to your more thorough knowledge on the subject and try to learn more how to use it instead of Goldwave. Thanks.

OK, so the comforting thought has entirely disappeared. :D Thanks. A little more research to confirm.

    Ohm question

No problem. I presume your amplifer is solid state. In solid state devices, when in doubt, always go for the higher impedance, not lower. So your 8-ohm speakers can be safely driven by your 6-ohm receiver. I bet the back of your receiver has a speaker impedance caution: not lower than 6...

2000 watt amp not working right

Let me get this right. You have a stereo power amp rated at 350wpc at 2 ohms (where does the 2000-watt amp come in?). IS this 350 also in RMS? And you have a couple of identical passive subwoofers rated at 400watts RMS each that you both connected to the amp's channels, respectively. And they...

    The “Sound” of receivers…

True enough. I probably am close minded. But no more closed minded than those who believe what I don't believe in. And like you said in another thread, reality bites. I may not like much of what it asks of me in this hobby. The magical world has so much more to offer, a wider vista and...

Are there any DTS 7.1 tiltles on dvd ?

So there are no 7.1 DVD titles out there. Whew, I almost thought I was missing some titles with all those 7.1, 8.1 and 9.1 receivers out there. I was about to ask if there are 7.1 DVD players as well. Wouldn't make much sense playng a 7.1 DVD on a 5.1 player that won't recognize the...

    DVD audio to CD

I recently tried the analog route as suggested by JoeE and it works fine for me. I used to record/compile favourite tracks from LPs and CDs into open reels then to metal tapes on 3 head machines and doing the same for hi-res DVD-A proved no more difficult. Ofcourse ripping the DVD-A digital...

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

You're right. But you may be surprised that there are some audiophiles who use large panel dipoles and treat the surrounding walls and floors to preclude early reflections and would swear they sounded better that way. The illogical things you can do in this hobby knows no limits.

    Recorded CD sound quality

Nope I didn't mean that. Pop music employ a lot of dynamic compression, more than jazz or classical music. But it appears to me that dynamically compressed materials lend itself more faithfully to data compression. It seems that the "masking" effect in psychoacoustics applies more generously...

    Recorded CD sound quality

Well I did say, rightly or wrongly, you can have near CD quality on MP3 for SOME materials at high bitrates. They are mostly pop music with very compressed originals to begin with. For the most part, you can't distinguish unless you listen hard enough. When I manipulated some cd tracks on...

    Recorded CD sound quality

Those early Telarc releases on CDs that were previously issued on LPs are excellent even by today's standards. They have reissued some in SACD using the same 20-bit soundstream masters that were used for LPs, and I must say that with the few titles I have, I can't distinguish the SACD stereo...

New Q's on 6.1 home theater!!!!

You're right, spliting the 6th channel into two speakers will just be in mono. I am not aware of any technigue you can do at home that will do that in stereo. The 6th and 7th channels for the back get discreet signals from two separate amps fed by the receiver's digital processors that have...

    power consumption

I guess people who insists that a 5.1 system will NEVER encounter a material that demands equal power on all channels have very limited exposure to some multichannel materials out there. They obviously do not listen to 5.1, or 6.1 stereo. OR to discreetly encoded SACDs and DVD-As where the bass...
