HDMI either works or doesn't. Either you get a clear picture with no drop outs and no sparkles or you don't. There is no in between or partial loss of resolution.

Have someone else switch between direct on/off while you don't know which is which to see if the audible differences remain or disappear. Also, make sure all of the tone controls, including the loudness contour are set flat.
