10 Things about Audio Amplifiers You've Always Wanted to Know

Probably but that's the issue often when I syndicate articles from manufacturers from time to time. I try to keep their product plugging to a minimal but its nice to get different content and perspective into the site whenever possible.

10 Things about Audio Amplifiers You've Always Wanted to Know

who is pushing the Axiom Amp? Two of my review samples blew up when I tested them which was noted in the review. Axiom won't even list my review on their website b/c they were so displeased with the results. I am still waiting for them to produce a bulletproof version of this amp b/c I feel...

10 Things about Audio Amplifiers You've Always Wanted to Know

Kaiser; You raise some valid points but also realize tweeters typically can't handle a lot of power to begin with so if you present them with a constant clipped signal of day 50% duty cycle or longer (IE. Squarewave), it doesn't take much to fry one. We aren't concerned with increased power...

Emotiva UPA-7 Seven Channel Power Amplifier Review

My tower speakers have built in passive subs. That is why I biamped. The actual subs have no xover so they are run full range relying on the natural rolloff of the drivers to act as a LPF. I like bi-amping these speakers b/c I feel you get better control of the bass. Not all speakers will...

    EMP E55ti Speaker Update

I meant that they don't emphasize bass or treble so yes I agree with you that they are a bit laid back in the top end. You should definitely listen without the grille for highest fidelity. that is quite possible since its a horizontally mounted MTM vs vertical from the towers. Try...

You are the 3rd person I've heard tell me this but I didn't want to say it publicly until I can confirm it. It's sad b/c B&K makes some nice amps. Too bad they never embraced online magazines and an online business model else things could have been much different for them. I remember years...

There is a 6dB diff in input sensitivity but they only specify voltage gain once which we aren't sure if its for balanced or unbalanced. I believe they are following the 6dB convention I mentioned but you could always call them to ask.

    Floorstanding Speaker Comparison

FYI; Tom's dedicated reviews of both speakers: Salk Song Towers Infinity Classica C336 I'd love to tell everyone to buy the Infinity's since they are sold on the AH E-store but the Salks appear to be a much better speaker.

That's a good idea to check with your B&K amp to see if level changes. However without measuring your B&K , we aren't sure what its unbalanced/balanced gain structure is unless it specifies it in the manual. I always prefer balanced b/c its less problematic and you usually get a lower noisefloor.

Brad; In the Pro world, Preamps are usually 6dB hotter on the balanced outputs compared to unbalanced and power amps are usually 6dB hotter on unbalanced vs balanced inputs. That way if you use unbalanced or balanced connections, the net result should be the same only the balanced gives you...

    Pulled the trigger...UPA-7

Regarding SNR A-weighting can yield a 10dB or more improvement over un-weighted depending on what amp topology, and what digital circuitry is producing out of band noise. Again you need to compare apples to apples. That being said, the Onkyo sounds like it has very good noise performance...

hmm. maybe they addressed my concerns via a firmware update. Next time I drag my test gear into the Theater room, I will re-measure it.

    Pulled the trigger...UPA-7

95dB unweighted at 1 watt is NOT above average, its superb. I've measured maybe 2-3 other amps in my lifetime that did this well and those amps were over $5k! I think you are confusing SNR at max rated power (115dB at 125watts) between amps of different power ratings to think that its full...

Emotiva UPA-7 Seven Channel Power Amplifier Review

No that's not entirely correct. The bigger Xformer of the UPA-7 plays a more vital role than more PS capacitance. The UPA-7 likely still has more available output power on a per channel basis and even up to 5 channels driven b/c of the larger supply. I spoke with Emotiva about both amps and...
