Anyone listen to anything like this?

I absolutely cannot stand rap. It completely sucks, and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even if an otherwise good CD just has a short rap break in one song, it is enough to ruin the whole thing for me. When the car next to me is playing rap, I want to give them the finger (the only...

Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

Hard to say what I would pick. What I did pick was 2 BP10s, 2 BP8s, no center, and no sub (none needed in my room with the '10s.) Actual cost=$1400ttl, and I have been 100% satisfied with it for 7 years so far. (I reserve my upgradeitis for the 2-channel setup in another room.:D)

Too bad they don't sell audio equipment.

Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

No. There are, however, some speakers at that price that are so good that I can't see how they could be improved on, even for 10X as much. (Def Tech BP10s are an example.)

Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

My other major hobby is painting. Other than preferring acrylic to oil, tubes to jars, and canvas to paper, there is nothing to get "tweaky" about. Some painters obsess about brushes, I suppose, but my style is not very dependent on brush quality. I also do origami. It is possible to spend a...

Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

Zip. Nada. It is very unlikely that a difference in quality between $1000 and $5000 would be audible, much less $5000 and $280,000 (they would sound different, of course, since even cheap speakers sound different from each other. One is not likely to be consistently preferred, however.)

    speaker grills?

Good observation. Speakers without grills do tend to attract the eye, which is not always a good thing.

Anyone listen to anything like this?

Tool remind me a lot of King Crimson, who have typically been caregorized as progressive rock (though they sound nothing like Yes or ELP.)

    Anyone else outgrown games?

Me either. I will never forgive computer arcade games for taking over from the physical arcade games I did enjoy, especially pinball.:(

Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

I agree that audiophiles tend to be gullible (especially "high end" audiophiles.) I don't know enough about other types of hobbyists, however, to make a comparison.:)

    Worst Movie Ever Made?

That's OK. I thought there was something really kinky going on when I saw a sign that said "Trucks entering and exciting highway".:o

    Performance/size ratio

Always switching things around As long as I own two or more distinct pairs of speakers, it is a given that I will keep swapping them. I can't ever settle on one pair and stick with them. My Def Tech towers (2 pairs, but essentially identical) and my KRKs each have their strengths, and I end up...

    speaker grills?

Yes, and that is where I part company with audiophiles. To me, those differences that everyone can hear are all that matter. Why should I care about (much less spend money on) differences too subtle to be detected except under highly controlled conditions (conditions not present during normal...

I have heard of Rundgren and Kraftwerk.

I have tried to get into Dave Matthews, but I just can't seem to.

    Worst Movie Ever Made?

I don't think I have ever seen anything worse than Lost In Translation (though some equally bad.) How can they make an entire movie where nothing happens? If it is possible to die of boredom, that movie would qualify as a weapon.

A Sad Day for the Good Old Boob-Tube!

If I were in the market for something 34" or smaller, I would not consider anything other than CRT (assuming I could accomodate the size and weight.) The picture is much better than anything else I have seen. When I switch to a different technology, it will be exclusively for the larger size...

    DLP vs LCD vs Plasma

I have not seen a DLP smaller than 50", but those are significantly cheaper than 50" plasmas and LCDs. If I could find a 42" DLP equally cheap compared to 42" plasmas/LCDs, I would likely buy it.

    Macroblocking

I always thought that it referred to large rectangular areas of solid color replacing detail, as though the pixels were huge. I have seen this on digital cable broadcasts when there is interference of some kind.
