    What does clipping sound like?

That is clipping on the master, and not the same thing as an amp clipping. Not sure if they sound similar or not (I have never driven an amp into clipping, and never will.)

    What determines imaging?

It might be worth experimenting a bit more. Mind you, I have no complaints about the imaging I am hearing now, as it is quite good. I am always in favor of improving it even more if I can, though. (In all rooms and with all speakers, I tend to prefer a lot of toe-in. That seems to be "hard...

    What determines imaging?

My current speakers (conventional dome tweeters) are 18" from the side walls (and several feet from the wall behind them.) Would moving them even farther from the side walls (hence closer together) improve the imaging, or is 18" enough? If I did move them farther in, how much?

    What determines imaging?

Seated between the speakers in an anechoic chamber, would you not hear imaging because of the stereo effect, much like when listening to headphones? (I thought that the goal of room treatment was to approximate conditions in an anechoic chamber, atleast to some extent.)

    Shrek the Third

Unfortunate, but how was the movie? A great picture is nice, but it is the content that really matters.

CD Compression Depression Music Industry Idiocracy

It is digital that makes extreme compression possible. It is my understanding that it can't be done on vinyl. (Of course, vinyl has many problems that CD does not, eg limited frequency range and high noise floor.)

    What determines imaging?

    1) The sound extends beyond the speakers left and right, and sometimes even beyond the walls of the room. 2) Sounds move up/down and front/back as well as side/side. (Occasionally, some sounds will even appear to originate behind the listener.) 3) A large instrument (eg a drum kit) has a 3D...

    Heard a live band today

I don't think I have heard any recordings of live kick drums since getting them (FYI they are Polk Monitor 50s.) I will try my Heart Dreamboat Annie Live and let you know.:)

And the sword goes into hiding...

What the heck do the "ranks" mean, anyhow? I noticed that I am now a General. Is it just based on the number of posts? Seems kind of pointless, to me.

    Seal - System

I bought a Seal CD once (I forget the title.) I liked the mellower songs on it, but not the dance-oriented material. I ended up selling it (I can't remember for sure, but it might have been tainted by traces of rap. I have tried to eliminate all hints of rap from my collection.)

    Heard a live band today

I prefer 2.0 (for music, not movies.) I have never had much luck integrating a sub. In fact, I recently switched to smaller, less bass-capable towers to get a better match with my room acoustics. I think it worked, in that the bass is now tighter (though less of it, of course.)

    What determines imaging?

I don't know how one would determine "identical quality" in such a comparison. It is a common belief (though not necessarily true) that "small bookshelf monitors have superior imaging". I have considered placing my speakers very far from the walls (meaning a minimum of 3' in any direction) to...

    What determines imaging?

I meant that these are two things that could effect imaging, but that most speakers have them in common and should therefore not image differently.

CD Compression Depression Music Industry Idiocracy

I hate to see people turning back to vinyl because of this. I would much rather see the industry pressured into changing its ways. Since my collection is already large enough to keep me going a long time, I could easily support a boycott. The key is somehow to get past the complacency, and...

    What determines imaging?

I have noticed that, even among monopoles, some speakers have significantly better imaging/soundstage than others. Since virtually all modern speakers have a 1" dome tweeter, and most have a narrow baffle with rounded edges, this seems counerintuitive. What are the design factors that...

    Audioholics bias towards HD DVD?

Some of us will be sticking to standard-def and couldn't care less about either format.:)

    Heard a live band today

Hope you like it as much as I do. (If not, I will feel guilty for convincing you to spend your $ on it.) FWIW the last 3 songs are the best.

    speaker grills?

My dilemma is that I like how my current speakers (Polk Monitor 50s) look without grills when they are turned off. When listening to them, however, all that silver is distracting. Putting the grills on/off repeatedly is too much trouble. For now, I am just leaving them on.

    Trying to remember the make/model...

I have figured it out. They were Eclipse TD speakers. Unfortunately, I cannot audition them as they have no US dealers or online dealers that I have been able to find.:(
