I have seen a speaker (not a sub) that uses a 3" driver in a 3" X 37" cylinder and claims 40Hz-20KHz +/- 3dB. It seems to me that it would suffer from the same sort of resonance. It also seems to have insufficient volume/driver area to achieve the claimed bass extension. Is this simply false...

If you were asking about something you planned to buy, it would make sense. Because you own them, you can listen and decide for yourself if you like them or not. There is no "high end" except what you like.:)

This morning I swapped the Mirages for the Polks again (not a trivial process.) I will listen tonight and try to arrive at a decision between 1) keep the Mirages, 2) keep the Polks, or 3) ditch both for something new.

I think it is because we aren't smart enough to comprehend them yet. (We haven't really been around all that long as a species, and our brains are not nearly as advanced as we would like to think they are.) As for knowing everything there is to know, I don't think there is much danger of that...
