My thoughts exactly. Delicious, probably. Healthy, no.:)

    Def Tech SM350's

As a general rule, the smallest speakers always have the best imaging. Small speakers can be weak in other areas (bass, dynamics), but a small baffle area is a major advantage for imaging.

    What is your favorite Movie?

I never watched that one, so I really am not in a position to say if it was good or not (nor is anyone else who hasn't seen it.)

I've had my ears hacked off with a chainsaw

Ouch, that all sounds really painful! I haven't heard it, but Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is said to be like that. Your description also applies to most things by the Butthole Surfers, Skinny Puppy, and the Dillinger Escape Plan.

Once again: what are you listening to now?

Have any of those old Styx CDs been remastered? The sound on my best-of collection is excellent, and I would love to have Grand Illusion in a similarly restored version. (To me, that was their best album.)

    The unobtainable ideal

Reminding myself that my "ideal" is just an abstraction helped me to better appreciate what I own. I enjoyed my system more last night than I have since I first bought it.

    Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Plant and Krauss is certainly not a pairing I would ever have thought of, but it works.

    I'm a shmuck

Were you driving the acurus into clipping? If not, why does speaker protection matter?

Good art should unsettle not soothe: Gormley

I haven't sold any either. I would be happy to do so if somebody likes it for what it is. I certainly don't cater to anyone's tastes, and don't care what critics or the public say. (I support myself with a non-art job precicely so that I don't have to care.:))

Good art should unsettle not soothe: Gormley

If you don't even get Picasso, you are not one to be passing judgement about who is or isn't an artist. Also, those of us who call ourselves artists don't need for you to agree. That just means you won't buy our stuff, which is your prerogative.

    Bass & Treble

Room EQ? Must be something mine doesn't have. I was able to set speaker distances, though.

    Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

It is a great CD. I would buy a live DVD if they made one.

    Bass & Treble

I have always run my HT receiver flat. In my music system, I bypass tone controls altogether.

    The unobtainable ideal

Yeah, I can see where that might do the trick!:p

Good art should unsettle not soothe: Gormley

I agree. There is great art that challenges (eg Duchamp, Picasso), and equally great art that soothes (eg Marc, O'Keefe).

    The unobtainable ideal

I have much larger speakers with a lot more bass extension. They cannot, however, compete with the minimonitors in terms of detail and imaging precision. I also don't find myself missing the extra bass. As for amplifier power, I use less than 1/3 of what I have.

    The unobtainable ideal

You are right. The fact is that I have a great system when I can push my formless desires aside and simply enjoy it for what it is. Dreaming of something "better", however, can interfere with that enjoyment.

    The unobtainable ideal

I used to go to live concerts a lot. I gave it up because they were excessively loud, and because they were often full of smoke.

    The unobtainable ideal

Because speakers are the biggest factor in how any system sounds by a really huge margin. Also because if I do upgrade again, it is much more likely to be the speakers than anything else (at least in the short run.)

    The unobtainable ideal

No matter how good my system sounds or how satisfied I am with it, I always find myself dreaming of something even better. The problem is that this "better" system is not something I have heard or even know about, but merely a vague ideal, almost an abstraction. I am not even able to identify...
