It doesnt matter how good your speakers are if you cant hear: Tinnitus

Now you know why I stopped going to concerts around 25 years ago. The last concert I went to left my ears ringing for 3 days, and that is when I said "enough!".

So show us where to get them on sale instead.

    PSB Fans?

I believe the term you were thinking of was "big box stores". (Of course, UE is a big box store and they carry Mirage.)

    PSB Fans?

Other way around. B&W is sold only in brick and mortar stores (which they have in most cities), while Mirage is available at all Ultimate Electronics outlets.

    PSB Fans?

Excellent question. I have never seen them online, and the last time I saw them in a B&M was in Montana (I liked what I heard then, though.) If they want to sell speakers, they should really make them available to the rest of us.

Planning a NY Vacation this summer

"New York vacation" is a tough concept for me to grasp. To me, vacation means getting as far away from the city (any city) as time and funds allow.

    advice on small size system

Oh, then only the center needs to be 6" or less. This increases your range of choices substantially.

Bookshelf v Tower for a smaller room

Um, the ones that I quoted. (Little music below 40Hz, sub difficult to integrate.) As I said, it is my room that causes muddy bass, not the speakers.

    The Mars Volta

No, but in my case it does mean buying almost exclusively jazz, new age, world music, and the mellower side of indie. When I do buy rock, it tends to be more melodic and less agressive than TMV. (Obviously, there are exceptions. For example, I like Modest Mouse.)

Bookshelf v Tower for a smaller room

Agreed on both points. I actually switched from towers to bookshelves (no sub with either) because the bookshelves don't excite the room modes that can make towers sound muddy. I find that I have no sense of "missing" bass at all. (If I ever upgrade, I would consider somewhat larger bookshelves...

    advice on small size system

I actively dislike Klipsch, and would never recommend them. Between the others, I prefer Def Tech, though both are good. Don't limit yourself to just these choices, though. Why 6"? Are you putting them inside a cabinet? If so, be aware that this can have a major impact on the sound (and not...

Bookshelf v Tower for a smaller room

That is a major understatement. I have never seen a Dali speaker in person, and I am not sure if I ever will.

Why does a great product get a bad name?

That was your mistake. If "do your own research" is all you learned from this site, it was a valuable lesson. I read reviews (whether on forums or in magazines) only as a way to learn about new products and view opinions. Final buying decisions are always based on what my own ears tell me.

    The Mars Volta

There was a time when their music would have appealed to me, but my tastes have mellowed since then (it is called "getting old", I think. :() They are definitely talented, though.

    center speaker poll

Why is this in the Steam Vent instead of the speaker forum? The only center that ever makes sense is one that tonally matches the mains, which is only going to happen by sticking to the same manufacturer. (Probably even the same line.)

Bookshelf v Tower for a smaller room

I think that more than room size must be involved. Large towers sound awesome in my HT, which is only 10' X 10'. Those same towers sound too bass-heavy in my music room, which is 12' X 20', and I greatly prefer bookshelves in there.
