    Rear surround placement?

Sanus makes some fairly nice stands that are not ridiculously priced. Check www.partsexpress.com for price and sizes.

    large vs. small surrounds?

I would urge you to experiment. Until I knocked down a wall to enlarge my listening room I had my rears pointed at the back wall. I have seen them pointed at the ceiling and at the back wall. I believe this is because you don't want them too close. Currently my rears are about 7ft. apart 6ft...

    Lexicon CP-3

You could think of a pre-amp processor. That way you could keep your Adcom amps. Adcom and several other manufacturers make pre-processors. You would then get DD and DTS. I understand your dilema as I have an old Lexicon processor. This is fine for me as I rarely listen to music in anything but...

    large vs. small surrounds?

Tweeter height usually should be around ear height or slightly higher. I should add that a lot of listeners place the rear speakers rather high and aimed down. This may be because of space restrictions. The taller stands have smaller platforms for speaker mounting. Using blue tack to mount the...

    large vs. small surrounds?

We used small dabs of bluetack in the coners of the stands mounting plates. We didn't have to worry too much about them being tipped over because the size of the speakers made a 22" stand height just right. We had to add a sub as my mom was not happy with the bass without a sub. She has been...

    Rega

I know they make great TT's and tonearms. The RB900 tonearm is world class. I had only recently heard of their foray into electronics. If it is any where near as good as their TT's and tonearms it should be more than okay.

THD in tubes and SS amps

They do dig the subwoofer they just don't care about the size!

Djoxygen you are one of the lucky few. Your SO (significant other) sounds a lot like my first wife. She actually blew the 5 amp fuses in the Acoustat interface boxes. She said "I've been playing them real loud for several hours". I was away on a business trip at the time. Fortunately I had spare...

    large vs. small surrounds?

The system my brother and I set up for our mother uses Sanus stands. They are not overly expensive don't look to bad and do the job. you will probably want to staple/tape or attach the speaker cables to the stands for aesthetic purposes.

    Teach me about Vinyl!

If you are interested in vinyl you could do worse than a Music Hall MMF-2 $349 with cartridge. I also suggest An Alsop Orbitrac for initial LP cleaning and a Discwasher or equivilant for dusting of. Listen for yourself and make up your own mind about vinyl. The needledoctor.com can supply all of...

THD in tubes and SS amps

You have a point there. I find most dome tweeters overly screechy. I have been using Maggy's, Quad's, Apogee's or Acoustat's since 1977. According to some of my audio buds my speakers always sound soft in comparison to their boxes. Could it also have something to do with the dispersion patterns...

    large vs. small surrounds?

By satellites do you mean something like B(l)ose mini-cubes? Bi-polar surrounds tend to give a larger more difuse sound field. For those of us who have large floor standers most small bookshelfs classify as satellites. Even with DPL and very small rears I notice a difference in bass response...

    Which bookshelves < $150?

I agree with Ryche 1. Everytime someone posts a request for a speaker recommendation I wonder why they don't listen for themselves. I'm not trying to come down on anyone. But don't you trust your own ears. I understand being steered in a general direction but deciding between two very similar...

    Lyrics that you think suck

I saw a scantily clad female on SNL singing My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard And They're like, "Its better than yours" Damn right, its' better than yours I can teach you but I have to charge I can teach you but I have to charge The name of the group was Kellis. It was so...

THD in tubes and SS amps

I guess the real question is. Do "chicks" hear or not hear something we don't? I'm not technically incompetant (BS EE MS IT) and I have tried to explain my results in other ways. I don't in way want to denigrate women. I "know" that specs and measurements say otherwise but vinyl and tubes seem...

    Opinions on headphones?

I just don't "get" headphones. Over the years I have managed to collect several sets including a pair of Stax SR84's. I have always thought phones sounded kinda' creepy with the sound coming from between your ears. Binaural recordings go a long way to removing the "creep". One of my recordings...

THD in tubes and SS amps

I don't care about distortion levels, ABX testing or any of that stuff. I only know that although my 2 ex-wives and all of my current lady friends couldn't care less about audio they all have a much better response when I use tube equipment. In the mid 80's when I began to listen to all the...

    Banana's Or Spades?

I use spades because once they are on and torqued down I can fugeddaboudit. The locking banana's do look good though. If you change things frequently I suppose banana's are the way to go.

THD in tubes and SS amps

Very interesting. Gives me more ammo when people ask why are you still using tubes. They always comment on how good the sound is before they notice the tubes. When they notice the tubes the comments range from "I didn't know they still made them" to "aren't those things obsolete". I don't know...
