Reading this thread makes me glad to be an atheist.

    Prepping for the Olympics

It should be fun to watch all the athletes trying to perform while wearing masks to protect them from the toxic Beijing air.

Do speakers wear-and-tear? What to look for when buying vintage

Many speakers in the '80s were made with foam around the woofers instead of butyl rubber. This foam tended to dry-rot after a decade or two, so check the condition of it. (If it is rotted, replacing it might still be worth the investment. You can get re-foaming supplies on ebay.)

How would I know if my AVR can drive floorstanders?

I recently read about the 362s being on sale for $199/pr brand new! Heck, that's less than I paid for my 250s!

Moving Frequently - best speakers for next 5 years?

I currently own three pairs of floorstanders. If and when I ever move, I am not looking forward to hauling them. The worst, however, will be my TV since it is a 34" widescreen tube (200 lbs, and most of that in the screen.) At least I don't worry about it getting stolen!:p

    Dark City Blu-ray

Dark city is a great movie (one of my favorites.) I have no idea how much difference Blu-ray would make, having only seen the standard DVD.

Moving Frequently - best speakers for next 5 years?

As an apartment dweller, I have tried acoustic panels. They made no difference, so I sent them back for a refund. (Of course, that could be because my apartment has good acoustics on its own. Drywall+plaster ceiling+wall to wall carpet+only a few small windows=few if any acoustic issues.)

So my center is MAXed out

I agree. I have used phantom center for years because not even Def Tech's own centers can blend seamlessly with my BP10s.

You should really stop going with drugs. They are bad for you.

Not possible, because I quoted the same Mew recommendation both times.

    5.0 Speakers for $900

Yes, and precicely because they have great bass extension. 45Hz is as low or lower than the majority of floorstanders under $300 each.

    Looking for some new stuff...

I like that one also. Another good indie rock CD is Change by Dismemberment Plan. (Of course, you cannot go wrong with any Modest Mouse CD.) Weirdly, I posted this response earlier and it disappeared for no reason!

Once again: what are you listening to now?

A lot of you guys are mentioning bands I have never even heard of, much less heard. It would be helpful to include a description, or at least a genre.

    5.0 Speakers for $900

Those are great speakers too, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone as an alternate to cheap floorstanders because they have somewhat limited bass. (The Alesis have bass that utterly belies their size. With eyes closed, you would swear they are big floorstanders.) Oh, and my speakers of...

So my center is MAXed out

Question 3 suggests that question 2 is in the affirmative. If it sounds better in 2-channel mode (the center not active), then the center is probably not keeping up with the mains.

    5.0 Speakers for $900

Very few floorstanders (if any) within that budget range will provide more bass extension than Alesis Monitor Ones. These are large bookshelves that extend to 45Hz +/-3dB with exceptionally flat response, wide dispersion, and vanishingly low distortion. Best of all, they can be had for just...

MSRP on those Infinities is $299 each, so $99 is one heck of a fantastic deal!
