Who Still Uses A Turntable?  What kind?

Vinyl lives I expect my VPI HW19 Jr Rega RB300 bought almost 10 years ago to last at least 10 more years. I bought my first LP in 1967. I still have that LP and play it once in a while. It is Aretha Franklin I Never Loved A Man. Now with 1K plus CD's my LP collection is still almost 3 times as...

    Worst Movie Ever Made?

Sorry Pepe, I recently saw Hero and loved it. Some of us don't mind reading the sub-titles. A little practice with books and magazines will increase ones reading speed and comprehension. The special effects were no more unbelievable than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Iron Monkey or Kill Bill...

    Worst Movie Ever Made?

Worst movie I have heard from the critics that Plan Nine From Outer Space and Attack Of The Killer Tomato's are about as bad as it gets. My personal pick for worst ever is Pooty Tang. This film is so bad it makes me wish Edison had never lived.

    Equalizer Advice Needed?

EQ or not to Q The first question that should be addressed is; why do you think you need an equalizer? Most of the av philes I know do not use or think they need an equalizer. My own gear does not even have tone controls. WmAx, I hope I have that right, seems to be quite knowledgable about the...

Do You Have Acoustic Treatments In Your Room

Acoustic treatments If the 2K plus LP's, rugs, books, wall hangings and other furniture aren't acoustic treatment I don't know what is. CD's aren't so good for this, the jewel boxes being highly reflective. By making wise choices about your room furnishings one can go a long way toward good...

    Turntable??

Check www.needledoctor.com they have a large selection of TT's and cartridges in every price range. They also have all the other accessories like record sleeves, Zerostats, vacuum cleaners and the Alsop Orbitrac. If you are in the Delaware Valley you can check out David Lewis Audio 8010...

What are you listening to now?

Today I've been listening to Osunlade (an African band). Cantos A Ochun Et Oxa is a demonstration of what rhythm and beat are all about. This band is maybe the tightest band I've ever heard. Even casual listeners comment on how tight the music is.

    Power Cable Help

I don't have a current catalog so I can't be sure. Try Mouser Electronics. WWW.mouser.com. They seem to have just about everything electronic. I found an OEM power supply for a laptop for $35 when the manufacturer (IBM) wanted $80+.

Have two analog surround sources, and 1 amp - solutions?

Rat Shack has a three input one output switch. Connect both sources to an input and connect the amp to the output.

    Upgrade Bug amp??

Adcom, Parasound or NAD for very good prices. Bryston, B+K and Acarus/Mondial at higher prices. 100 WPC at 8 Ohms will probably be sufficient. Amps from these manufacturers will last a long time. Current new Brystons come with a 20 Year Warranty.

    Vinyl Storage

It's actually better for the record (less warping) when they are stored vertically library style. Leave enough breathing room between them to insert or remove one easily. The gentle pressure will help with warp prevention. Also, turning the inner sleeve so that the record just slides out is...

    Are Isolation Platforms Effective

I have found that with belt drive TT's removing the dust cover when playing records sounded better than leaving it on. I suppose air born vibration could cause the cover to vibrate and transfer that to the plinth. I have observed "heard" this on several spring suspended TT's based on the...

Article on Harman Audio in "Test and Measurement World"

The fact that a given speaker has a difficult impedence curve really isn't that important to me. If I purchased a speaker that was that difficult a load I would purchase appropriate amplification. I suppose I just never got over the sound I heard from some IRS Beta's I heard years ago.

    Equipment Round-out

Before you sell the Adcom gear check around and see for yourself that the Adcom stuff commands a decent price on audiogon and e-bay. The market for used receivers is non existant (that should tell you something). If you like the Adcom gear get their pre-pro some more Adcom amplification and more...

I lost faith and interest in Infinity speakers when Arnie Nudell sold the company.

    Luxman Replacement

The Jolida will more than likely sound closer to the type of sound you are looking for. BTW there are many posters on this site who will say that all amps sound the same and refer you to DBT. Listen to your and your SO's own ears.

    Worth a speaker upgrade?

Is that a better mouse trap? If not what is it supposed to do? Where can I get one? Does it work? How much will they pay me to accept one?

Article on Harman Audio in "Test and Measurement World"

I wonder what "inexpensive" means. I also wonder if in the future they will apply the same design philosophy to more expensive speakers.

    Digital Music Inceases Stress!!

I seem to remember an article in Stereophile years ago about digital recordings on vinyl causing not only physical problems to people but mechanical (cracked bearings?) problems on a VPI TT. Could this reference be the same paper the Stereophile article is based on? I really have to check my old...
