Received my Carnegie CSB1's today, a lot of people wanted to know what I thought...

I know the temptation to get them set up is great, but I've got parents coming to visit this week so dear old mom will be out with her magnifying glass so cleaning and rearranging has to be done first.

I will say these bad boys are very heavy for their size was a chore to get both of them up the steps. My arms are actually tired from carrying them, definitely the heaviest speakers for their size I've ever encountered. I'm sure I might have heard denser but never had to carry them myself. Obviously they are off to a very good start. I didn't order no rez as I thought there was some fill included which I would mess with first to see if I need no rez.

I would get the fill there before opening the speakers up, why pull a driver more than you have to... I believe there is stuffing in there its just not installed coorectly, Im not sure if the towers were different...

I'll shoot off a quick email to Danny, I'm pretty sure they have fill in them and just need it moved around. No rez is an option to reduce the resonance even more, but would be an option even if the original fill were applied correctly.

I would have had to set them up too. Screw waiting for the weekend.

You'll need to buy some No Rez. From what I recall from the thread at Audio Circle, there were places it was installed incorrectly but also places where it was missing altogether.

The no rez is not an optional install , it is a necessity to bring the towers up to snuff as per Danny's specs. I have no idea as to the polyfill/stuffing but the peel and stick/no rez is missing in some areas and must be added as per Danny' via e-mail instructions. I will post them here.

check the last pages of this plan and it will show where the no rez should be then open up the towers and check these areas, add as needed
This plan will also show where the polyfill should be as well, sawz.

Is the a diagram like that for the book shelves and center. I would like a diagram to follow for mine. My engineer brain just would feel better for the long haul. Thanks!

Jeff I will contact Danny about that and see if we can get them posted here as well. I think the tweaks for the bookshelves and center are very minor and fairly easy to do it is just a matter of moving around some polyfill but I and probably some others here can find out for sure and post back.sawz.

If possible that would be very helpful. Thanks!

Wow, I even read those instructions before I ordered, and somehow my brain malfunctioned and I never ordered the no rez.

To my knowledge there is no diagram for the fix on the bookshelves and center. The bookshelf instruction is to just remove some of the poly fill as the Chinese company just stuffed a big wad in there that completely fills the inside of the cabinet. Danny wants it so that the back and sides of the cabinet are covered but there is some space behind the woofer and direct access to the port.

For the center the poly fill is in the correct place there just isn't enough of it directly behind the woofers. You just need to add another layer or so. I bought some polyfill from a hobby center but there was enough in what I removed from the bookshelves that I could have just used that and not had to buy the polyfill.

So my wife says to me, "I know why I don't like those speakers. You can see the wires."

Women. I think the wires are sexy.

I actually made some longer ones than the ones in these pics so they reach the floor and then I zip tied them to the stands.

That's what I used to do with my old ones. I used some short velcro straps to attach them to the stands and they weren't visible. Tell her not to look.

When I got my CSB-1s, Danny sent me a bunch of pics of how he wanted them done from the manufacturer. I didn't pull it all out and start from scratch, but I pretty much ended up with them like the final shots.

*Edit - I also didn't pull the tweeter out either, wasn't really necessary to achieve what was needed

First layer in the back of the cabinet

Second layer added on top of that

Final

Another crazy too good to be true sale.

Thanks!! Much appreciated. I assume I could remove some from my bookshelves and add to the center I can likely break even with my polyfill redistribution.

I have some electronics moving to do before I can get the speakers hooked up, instead of no rez, I ordered some damping material from parts express, wanted something I'm sure would be here on Friday.

I think I'll give the speakers a good listen before putting the new material in, I'm curious to see how big of a difference I notice.

Darien is correct , there is not a plan for the center and booksheves regarding the poly fill Danny got back to me and simply stated exactly as everyone is already doing and here are his exact words, and I quote lol no actually I copy and paste .

The center channel speaker was well lined but it was a little thin in the back. They just need a little loose fill added to the back half of the box behind each woofer.
on the bookshelves you will need to Just remove the woofer (six Allen head screws). And pull out the wad of insulation. Then re-install the insulation covering the side walls and crossover, but leaving a nice little pocket behind the woofer and leaving a clear path to the port. And now your B stock speakers are A stock.

Thanks,
Danny
