With The U.S. Government Shutdown...

Anyone else wondering?

A few weeks ago the white house had enough money to bomb Syria.
But now we can't afford to let WW-II Veterans into an open air memorial?
Not quite. A few weeks ago, the government was allowing itself to continue spending money that it didn't have.

It's like having your parents cut you off from their credit cards. :)

My point was more to show how it's a Dog & Pony show.

It costs money to have a park ranger there to keep people out.
While it costs nothing to allow Vets to walk around outside. :)
Edit: High visibility public programs are always cut first, to teach us a lesson.

I didn't pick up on that. Sorry. However, some people don't know why we'd "have the money" then but not now.

I think it's more about getting our attention than teaching us a lesson.

If you read my post about the memorial, you know my opinion on it. But, maybe being positive about other people made most folks ignore that post...seems like bashing other people is the way to get thanks. :D

You're right. We never really had the money then, or now.

Sure, getting our attention or teaching us a lesson. To keep business as usual and leave our children with the debt.

My excuse: being away and not being able to easily read everything on my phone.

Flew out of Atlanta yesterday. Couldn't tell any government shutdown was going on. Security lines sucked just as bad as always. :D

I firmly believe that there are supremely qualified and ethical people serving in elected positions. But, politics seem to attract a disproportionate number of people who are the last people who should hold elected office. So, we end up electing who we think are the least worst candidates. That's not a comforting thought....

But, we're are own worst enemy. For a politician to tell people the truth, would be the kiss of death come election time.

We have a provincial election on Oct 8th. Right now, we have a left-leaning government (New Democratic Party). This past term was their first in power and the only reason they got elected, was because the two old parties - Progressive Conservative (Right-Centre) and Liberal (Left-Centre) - have exchanged terms in power since this country was formed, and have been almost uniformly incompetent. Whether it's pork-barrelling, patronage, spending scandals - we've seen it all from both. So last election, Nova Scotians said WTF, lets go with the pie-in-the-sky lefty loonies. Guess what happened: more of the same. Well, they had their shot and came up wanting, so the polls are pointing to a Liberal party win - probably because they're the longest out of power. I'm seriously thinking of spoiling my ballot. :(

I have no doubt that our issues are no different from other provinces or US states. Democracy is messy, but the alternative just isn't very appealing...

We may say we have a red and a blue party but, in reality, they both answer to the green party, and I'm not referring to those environmentaly friendly folks.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years." Alexander Fraser Tytler, Scotland (1747–1813).

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.” Alexis de Tocqueville, France (1805-1859)

I could be making this up, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Rick is running a pretty strong campaign to become the new Queen of Canada. Something about having an a$$ that never quits.

It doesn't hurt that he's such a skilled orator, either.
