I firmly believe that there are supremely qualified and ethical people serving in elected positions. But, politics seem to attract a disproportionate number of people who are the
last people who should hold elected office.
So, we end up electing who we think are the least worst candidates. That's not a comforting thought....
But, we're are own worst enemy. For a politician to tell people the truth, would be the kiss of death come election time.
We have a provincial election on Oct 8th. Right now, we have a left-leaning government (New Democratic Party). This past term was their first in power and the only reason they got elected, was because the two old parties - Progressive Conservative (Right-Centre) and Liberal (Left-Centre) - have exchanged terms in power since this country was formed, and have been almost uniformly incompetent. Whether it's pork-barrelling, patronage, spending scandals - we've seen it all from both. So last election, Nova Scotians said WTF, lets go with the pie-in-the-sky lefty loonies. Guess what happened: more of the same.
Well, they had their shot and came up wanting, so the polls are pointing to a Liberal party win - probably because they're the longest out of power. I'm seriously thinking of spoiling my ballot.
I have no doubt that our issues are no different from other provinces or US states. Democracy is messy, but the alternative just isn't very appealing...
