Looking to upgrade my 12 year old system. We listen to music 70% and watch movies the rest. I am a beginner, not trying to break the bank at $1000. Just spent 2k on a LG 3d network tv. Have a feeling this is going to turnout to be addictive. My entertainment room is aprox 12' x 14. Have been trying to read as much as I can soak in. My first atemp:

$329.99 DENON-AVR-1912-7.1ch-Network-A/V-Home-Theater-Receiver-w/Airplay

$699.00 EMP TEK Impression Series 5.1 Home Theater System

Welcome, If I was spending $1000 an AVR powered 5.1 is going to make the most sense...

With 70% music you are going to want a nice set of towers but you can easily spend the entire budget on an OK set......

Here is what I would spend $1000 on...

$400 New andrew jones pioneers speakers with towers for front l and r.

HSU Stf2 STF-2 Subwoofer

denon receiver DENON AVR-1613 5.1ch Networking Receiver w/AirPlay 3D ready | Accessories4less

if you can spend a few bucks more on the avr http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/DENAVR1912/DENON-AVR-1912-7.1ch-Network-A/V-Home-Theater-Receiver-w/Airplay/1.html

Thats a couple bucks over budget but, will be a good start

That will be a really nice system for movies and music, but for real good music, I like a separate system, and you can easily spend $1000 there, so when its time to upgrade, keep it in mind..

And yes, its addictive...

For your size room, that can be a nice set-up.

EDIT: I now have a bit more wiggle room for a receiver. Was going to pull the trigger on the Denon AVR-1912 but now hoping to purchase something a bit better.

Finally pulled the trigger on the Deonon AVR-1913 7.1 which was the same price as the 1912 model with free shipping. Expanded my budget to 1K just for speakers but need advice on a speaker package.

Would you be willing to add to the setup over time? :)

Was thinking of the EMP Tek 5.1 system and call it a day but I want options. Would like to put one together but dont want any conflicts between brands. I need a center, set of towers and a good sub. Is the Klipse RW12D better than the EMP ES1010i?

The EMP subwoofer, that is a really good sale right now. If you want a sub that digs low, the best affordable sub for that is the Hsu VTF2, but that would eat up a good chunk of your budget. It would leave you room in your budget for a decent pair of bookshelf speakers though, and that is a good place to start to build up a system. But if you want a whole 5.1 setup now, what I would do is jump on that EMP sale but swap out a pair of the bookshelf speakers for their E5Ti towers.

I assume music is more important to you?

Have you considered going 2.1/2.0 and upgrading to a 5.1 as funds become available?

For a $1000 speaker budget and mostly music and 5.1 >> Pioneer along
with the HSU sub is a good option. >>> The Emptek should also still be
considered. If you want to step it up a little and build in sections, Then
I would look at a pair of Focal 705V speakers and a HSU sub.
Dedicated Audio - Focal Chorus 705V Loudspeaker -- WENGE

As far as the Klipsch subwoofer - not one I would look at for music. > There
have been quite a few people, and a shoot-out review, that have commented
on its lack of quality for music. However, there are some who still like it.

Audition, audition, audition. Try a few to figure out what you like.

For primarily music use the Mains and subwoofer need to be rock solid. The center and surrounds can be dispensed with altogether. I'd recommend these keeping sound accuracy above everything.

Ascend Acoustics CMB170, SV Sound SB1000.
