Dear audioholics! I'm not sure if any of you guys are in NYC area or Brooklyn that can lend me a hand putting some of my stuff in boxes tomm Mon, Tues or Wed. I'll be there from 10am-3PM. I need to move my stuff, so they can start repairs in my apt. PM me if you can help. If you can bring boxes too that would be a plus. Thank you in advance.

Wait - are you sure that you're a guy? :D

J/K! That's very cool that you didn't lose those momentos. I have older pictures that I don't often look at, but I'd feel horrible if I lost them.

Wow, I'm so sorry that you lost so much! At the very least you came out of it safe and sound. That's huge.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, especially the sentimental things that are almost impossible to replace. I'm happy to hear you were able to save some family pictures.

I know he did not have a vast collection of records, and was just starting out building his collection. I know he is interested in vinyl and had two nice turntables.

If he does not want it, I will give it to one of my sons for Christmas. I think it is a better one than he has.

At the price it was too good to pass up and is a small gamble at the price. $45 for Heaven's sake. Restored to working condition, it would bring me a handsome profit on eBay or Audiogon in any case. This is a really small gamble as far as I'm concerned, and one I will win more likely than not. Odds are much better than in Vegas!

I know if I lost my vinyl I would not try to rebuild the collection. However almost all of my collection dates from the pre digital CD era. I would really be upset to loose it though. I very nearly did once in 1979.
TLS,

I thought of you last night when I went to my supers apt and my new Norah Jones LP arrived. Which I ordered a couple days before Sandy. Not sure I can can salvage all my LP collection, but I'm gonna try. They are all mostly wet. Maybe I can get a case to just put in the vinyl without the original covers?

Wash them thoroughly in distilled water and let them air dry on a horizontal rod through the center holes.

The out them in new sleeves and jackets.

You can get them here.

Or here.

Do this promptly before mold sets in, that will ruin them.

It is definitely worth trying to salvage them and likely you will be successful.

Through the jackets away, they will be a health hazard.

Use gloves!

Best of luck with this.

Those are some good links TLS. How long do you think I can keep them wet? It's been a week today.:( I must have like 350 records long process too.

PS: I'd to thank the audioholics members who have helped me during this already one week ordeal. Thank you for your PM's and generosity it really means the world to me.

A lot depends on temperature. The warmer the quicker mold will take hold, and then it is game over. Mold will damage the record surface quickly.

I assume the records are still in an unheated apartment. Once the heat goes back on, it will be game over fast.

The sooner the records come out of the jackets the better. The soggy paper will be the nutrient source for the mold.

The best advice I can give you is that if you want to save that collection, do not delay.

One other thing, add a little Chlorox to the distilled water, a few drop of concentrate per pint.. This will knock down any mold especially in label.

Thanks for asking psbfan9. We had to reschedule for Saturday(The day of my move) because she was running late and I couldn't wait cause I had to pick up my sis and niece. She took my info. and told me that they'd get back to me once they review it. I'm very hopeful. She told they only cover essentials like I said earlier. I am very thankful If they can help in anyway. I moved my stuff to storage as well. My hands and body were aching after we finished. I got to save my soaked CD's, DVD's, BD's which I stored in bins and they were heavy as heck. Now I just need to buy DVD, BD and CD cases. I see they sell 500 in one. I might need 5 or 7 of those. I got to save some LP's, but not all. :(
