Hey guys just registered complete beginner so go easy.

I have a Sherwood PM-9805 turn table and a small record
collection. I have no means at the moment of appreciating the sound, my understanding is that modern audio systems usually do not have phono inputs, therefore making it hard to get a good sound out of the turntable.

So I have two options:

1. get a pre amp and continue to use my sony mhc-rg270 hi fi system

or

2. buy an older amplifier with phono ports, run the turntable through that and just use the speakers from my hi fi system.

I have come across a Yamaha RX-V2090 for about $180 and it has a shitload of inputs, including the phono ports (and seems to be quite a high end amp).

I am not by any means an 'audiophile' but I do want to get a decent
sound out of the vinyl records as that is the point of having them....

Should I shell out the money for the Yamaha receiver?

Or would you recommend just spending 20-30 dollars on a stand alone pre-amp?

Or something else? What are the pros and cons? am I on the right track at all lol????

Thanks for reading guys I hope I have made things clear.

I like how records sound with tube amps... save up, get a decent tube amp and some mildly efficient speakers...

So you'd have him just not play any of his music till then?

Really either solution will work out just fine. If you're happy with your setup as a whole then getting an external phono-preamp is a good solution. The biggest downside is having yet another piece of equipment required. If you'd rather have an all in one solution go for the receiver.
