The Hunger Games

I just finished the first book last week, so maybe now I'll see the movie. I enjoyed the book, for sure. I downloaded the other two audio books today.

Watched it last night in the theater and walked away feeling slightly depressed. It was such a dark movie IHO pitting kids against kids. Not having read the books, I also realize its so much more than kid verses kid. I think I'll have to find the time to pick up the books and read them. I have a feeling there's much more in the 2nd and third books that the first flick reveals.


BTW, I think the beard looked awesome!!

You need to read those books IMO. They are fantastic and make the movie a better experience. The Movie complements the book.

Like the over-hyped Harry Potter or Twilight series?

I can't believe every Harry Potter movie grossed like $700 million world wide. Unbelievable hype.

The HP series was excellent IHO and very entertaining. I enjoyed each and everyone. Twilight however is a teenage hormonal heart throb movie filled with bad acting. The kids in Harry Potter had better acting skills when young then the adults in Twilight.

The Hunger Games is dark not in the magic sense but in the real world sense. There are kids in 3rd world countries who are trained as soldiers killing other kid soldiers and civilian and adults so the film isn't a huge stretch of the imagination. The only imaginative part is turning the killing into a game. Its dark but its a good movie. If your into special affects and a stellar soundtrack, look else where. This film is more meat than flash.

I know that Darien . However, the whole series was written by a lady who was flipping through the news and watching a game show at the same time and came up with the idea for these books. The poor districts represent the 3rd world countries.

More likely she was watching Battle Royale and thought, "Hey not too many people saw this movie, I'll just change it up a bit and nobody will know."

Still a good story though.

There is a lot more to the story than the games, but it certainly does have a battle royale flavor.

So who's going to see it? I LOVED the books and Jennifer Lawrence is crazy hot, but I know the theaters are going to be packed this weekend. I really want to see it though.

She is going to be a big star me thinks. Not bad to look at also. ;o)

I already love Jennifer Lawrence from Winter's Bone, but honestly her acting ability was sort of underutilized in this one. I know they had it aimed at a specific age group since the books were also, but I was hoping for a bit more gritty drama. This was pretty mellow.

I think it's a matter of time given by the studio. The books are very gritty and they aren't as predictable as you might think. Jennifer Lawrence definitely played the role from the book IMO. I'm excited for the next movie, but I doubt it really portrays how amazing the 2nd book is.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It is very obvious they dumbed it down, and I didn't have to read the book to pick up on that. The movie came off as pretty tame to me, but it doesn't strike me as how the story really probably is. It is sort of like a decent meal that could have used a little more seasoning, and I will definitely check out the next films.

The other problem I had...the story is sort of run of the mill IMO. Forget Battle Royale. Running Man Gamer (surprisingly decent).

Certainly the plot and characters have more nuance to them, but few movies really get all that right. My main source of amusement is with Jennifer's reasonably polished appearance at the beginning of the film. Can't ugly up the eye candy too much I guess.

Like I said I read the books, but while the knowledge provided me additional insight for viewing the movie which felt rushed (or skipped) on many point, still I would not recommend reading the books since after the first they progressively deteriorate in quality ...

Due books and movie main target audience is young female adults - I question amount of gore in the books, especially the grand finale of last book was really necessary

I'm not a literary critic of significant repute or anything, but I found them all to be page turners. I've read worse in any case. I couldn't even make it through Wicked... That was one case where the performance leaving out a considerable amount of the detail was quite appreciated.

I'd opine that's the way writing a story goes. It takes a life of its own, and an author may well end up somewhere they never thought they would when they first started writing.
