They were page turners only to the extent that I wanted to know what happened, not because the story progressed well. The second book was a lazy rehash of the first and the third was a highly abbreviated affair that pretty quickly went down a crazy rabbit hole and then just ended.

That'd pretty much be the definition of a page turner :p

I don't know about all that. They certainly have commonalities, partly as one would reasonably expect, but at the same time the second book considerably expands upon the universe. The first book was really looking at things through a microscope; the second took a much broader view.

third was a highly abbreviated affair that pretty quickly went down a crazy rabbit hole and then just ended.
Things certainly got strange, and the action took over at that point, I'll agree.

I define a page turner that grips you in its story so you want to read it.... not a slog-fest that has you rolling your eyes with some frequency just so it can end :p

*spoiler alert*

The sound is relatively subdued until that first cannon goes off. Almost gave me a heart attack.

Ehh if things get that bad, I just stop reading. It's like when the wife turns on Jersey Shore or Keeping Up With The Kardashians (she likes to watch train wrecks), I find something else to do with myself. Of course, I'm not going to claim that the series is some masterpiece either.
