Timbre match for Onkyo HT-S6100 Speakers (P163s?)

Hi! So I've narrowed down my choice of speakers to a select few and I was wondering if you guys could help me figure out based on knowledge or experience which ones would best fit into the current sound in my 7.1 Onkyo setup with an altered receiver to the Onkyo TX-NR708 and an added subwoofer (the Polk Audio PSW505). I'm planning on replacing the front L&R speakers and using the replaced Onkyo speakers as front wides or highs. In other words, I'm planning on making it into a 9.2 system using Audyssey DSX.

Mainly, I'm interested if the Infinity Primus P163 speakers would work for this case. Otherwise, the options I have in mind are the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 SE speakers, the PSB Alpha B1 speakers, and the Paradigm Atom v.6 speakers. If any of these are mainly near-field monitors(which I'm not sure about), obviously they can instantly be excluded, so if that's the case, please inform me, lol.

I appreciate any advice/information provided. Thanks in advance!


PS- If anyone can tell me whether the Alphas or the Atoms are better for portable indoor use, powered by the Dayton DTA-100a amp, that would also be appreciated XD. If any other speakers within a similar price range come to mind as better options FOR EITHER CASE, don't hesitate to suggest them. The main intent in both cases I guess would be music. None of the speakers will timbre match the Onkyo speakers. I would at
least aim, to timbre match the front 3 channels - and, set up a nice 5.1
system with a good sub, and then add later if funds allow. I do aim for a
good foundation first, before aiming for this extra processing beyond the
origional 5.1 or 7.1 tracks. A second sub if needed, would be a good way
to go - after the origional foundation.

The speakers listed above, are not nearfield - and will work for HT. The
Infinity speakers, would be a nice step-up for you.

Thank you, but that wasn't my question. I've actually recently put together an Infinity setup. In any case, that's not the point. I'm looking to do exactly what I said. I'm willing to replace the front speakers and that's it. Maybe the Center as well after I find out which speakers I'm getting.

Lol, so what about that? Are those better speakers? If not, I wouldn't care enough to get those to leave everything the same and just to add front wides and highs. That is interesting though, lol.

Oh, well of course, I know that. I didn't get it because I thought that was rather obvious and is something I myself kind of hinted at... That doesn't mean higher quality speakers can't somewhat match them in terms of a similar level of efficiency and similar type of timbre. The difference could just be power, clarity, and overall accuracy (amongst other things), but the general timbre could be similar in nature which is the point - which is what I'm looking for. Is the suggestion that there is probably no such match even remotely?

I mentioned the Infinity Primus as my main interest because I've heard them and there are similarities in the intended sound. Again, of course they're in a different league altogether but in any case, it's why I'm looking for some input.

I'm not sure what you're thinking when making the suggestion so I'm not sure what you mean, especially when you phrase it in such a way. Do you mean those could be a significant and worthwhile upgrade which would match what I'm looking for? I somehow doubt it XD

Mitsubishi in the past, have sold Home Theater packages,
based on a rebadge Onkyo receiver. However, the speakers
tended to be better than Onkyo speakers.
That speaker is better than your Onkyo speakers - however,
I would go with Infinity Primus, over the Mitsubishi ones.

Don't even try and match them. Just ditch the Onkyo speakers and move on to something better. If you try and match the Onkyos you will be no further ahead.

Don't obsess about the number of channels. A good two channel system will beat a bunch of poor speakers anyway. Most would be ahead spending their money on two decent speakers and not seven lousy ones.

Remember all really good speakers match. Timbre matching is in reality choosing speakers with similar shortcomings.

I ENTIRELY agree with you. In fact, I could write an article on what you just said. This will be kept in mind for MY NEXT setup in a different location, out of the house. Right now, and considering the location, I'm content with what I have. Mainly I just wanted to improve the front speakers hence the reason for the post. I see your point though and maybe it's in fact a lost cause. You know, figured I'd ask... I'll just leave things as is then.

Really I was just hoping I could get the Infinity speakers, hoping that wouldn't screw up the balance so much that the Audyssey MultEQ calibration wouldn't really even help to enough of an extent, or in other words, making things worse, there being too much of a tradeoff...
