The Dawg Crusher Killer

Well, after living with this sub for 3 days and extensive listening, I can say that I am very impressed. This sub enhances my system in a way no other ever has. Each low passage burst into my listening room as a well defined thud with clean, defined and sudden, explosive power.

I have now moved my ranking of this sub on top; with the Dawg Crusher coming in second and the Servo15 in 3rd. My old SVS stays at #4 as it wasn't nearly as musical as these sealed subs.

I would be interested to see what the Dawg Crusher would've done in a properly weighted box and fed enough power as I think the driver itself was a little better than the JL.

Oppman, take the Dawg Crusher to the next level for us.

Man, I am getting itchy thinking about the second one.

In case you are wondering what that crazy dawg is gonna do next...I am thinking about trying to find some Paradigm Signature S4 and place them on top of the Subs to free up a little floor space. Since they quit making them, I may have trouble finding them in Piano Gloss. What B&W would be a good replacement?
I have to recharge the fun account before I can add more power to the Dawg Crusher. Might be too much for the room I have it in anyway.:D

I have to agree with Warp. I'd go S6's if at all possible. You won't be sorry in the long run. They're a little smaller than your 100's too if I remember correctly.

:D

I'm just sayin - show me your eq measurments and I'll buy it...

You do what you want with your speaker, but I also have some heavy stuff sitting on my LMS boxes and they don't stay put either....

I would suggest just going with the S6's if you can find some...

I can attest to that.

I blew 3 woofers in my Studio 40's trying to hit high volumes in my 8,000 cuft room. Since I changed to the Studio 100's, I haven't blown one.
Which is another reason you shouldn't be lookin at larger speakers then the S4's, though their power handling is much better then studio line....

I know, as soon as I wrote that, it reminded me of why I changed.

roofing felt could be used to reduce vibrations.

Lining your lamps with roofing felt might keep them from vibrating :D
You would modify the worlds most beautiful woman to see if you could improve her...:p:D

Uttt....Ohhhhh....

The JL burped a few times when I was playing Iron-Man last night at high volume. It didn't really sound like the mechanical sound of bottoming out but it did make a weird burping sound.

This was at volume the Dawg Crusher would have laughed at.

You need to buy 3 more right away!

I would get 7 more but 4 total is a good starting point. 2 stacks of 4 would fix the problem for sure.:D

You hit the built in limiters.....

Now you can take into account how much excursion that the Axis has compared to the F113, plus the larger cone on the Axis also provides more output... If you had a larger amp you could have probably gotten even more output from it...

I knew about the limits of the JL for such a large room and chose DIY instead for those reasons.

I would like to see a retraction of your rankings now... :)

Huh? The limiter shouldn't burp, might want to call them about that.

It's a bummer having to worry about a sub making funny noises while watching a movie. I think you should buy an external limiter and set it hard knee just before the JL limiter so you don't have to worry about that sound. Obviously set everything up so that it stays off the limiter, but, if for some reason it does get that far, at least nothing happens versus funny noises.

What would you use for an external limiter?

May not matter once the 2nd sub arrives. I was running a tad to hot.

Not true, the limiters are designed to kick in to prevent over excursion, he is trying to pressurize an extremely large room of 8500^3. 1 F113 will not provide the amount of output that he is looking for, he is over driving that sub to get the output he is looking for and he clearly stated that the Axis had no problems at the same volume.

There have been plenty of people that have experienced the farting with these subs, it is well documented in the F112 and F113 threads over at AVS.

Trust me, I know all about pushing the limits of drivers in sealed box designs in the same size room. Ported or PR designs will give you better output from the same size drivers with less effort, but not everyone can live with the size boxes it takes.

Well, that would be my last resort. For what those JL's cost, their limiter shouldn't be making noise. It should be as graceful as possible. Genelec's and Bag End's low cut first, like if they are running out of excursion they start to low cut at 25Hz, then 30Hz, then 35Hz, and so forth. Then at some point they start to limit the whole signal with a hard knee. At any rate, when I run those too hot, they just don't get any louder...certainly no noises. That's how it should be.

Now, for 200 bucks or so you can get a adjustable knee limiter from dbX or someone....166XL or something, that will work fine.

I'm not trying to wind you up about it, but, I just personally hate having to worry about speakers making funny noises when I watch a movie. Nothing sucks like watching some awesome action scene and wondering when they crash if your subwoofer is going to pop. With a limiter, it should be worry free. You shouldn't be on the limiter all the time, but, if it happens, it shouldn't make a noise.
