Sherlock Holmes

Watched this one on Dish HD last night. I will probably end up picking this one up on BD. Even with just the standard dd 5.1 track, the audio was pretty good, so I am sure it will only improve on the BD. LFE was quite good in a few key scenes. There is a decent story, good action, and as expected, mystery and suspense. Overall it is quite well done for one of the more mainstream movies from Guy Ritchie. I almost blind bought it but since I had a freebie on Dish, I figured I'd check it out. I don't know that I'd call it a blind buy for all, but definitely worth checking out. Recommended.

I rented the BD. The sound was indeed pretty good. As for the movie itself, I'd give it a C+. It was ok. I wouldn't watch it again though.

It isn't an instant classic, but it was entertaining. IMO, it isn't one of Guy's best, but for what could be considered a "big" or "normal" movie from him compared to the likes of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels or Rock & Rolla, I thought it was good. I like pretty much all of his movies too though. Worth a rent for sure.

I agree that it was entertaining. The sound and picture quality were also very good, I watched it from an AppleTV download, also on a whim, and it sounded and looked very good.

A complaint I had from the story is I would have liked to have been able to follow what Holmes was thinking more.

Yeah, it is obvious that he is picking up clues, but you don't get to hear all the explainations until later. At least a little insight would have been nice, as they are giving you the clues without explaining some of them, but by wrapping it up with all of the clues explaining everything like one of the books still works.

I have the BD and watched it last week. The sound was really good, DTS-HD-MA, IIRC. I liked this movie and thought it was probably the truest depiction of Holmes in the movies even though it wasn't based on a Conan Doyle story. I've read all the stories over and over. Guy Ritchie really nailed the Holmes and Watson characters. The mystery was fun, too.

Thanks John for this insightful review. I do plan to see it sometime in the very near future. The question is when and where.........been at the hospital a lot lately as my Mom is back in once again. Seems to never end. However, I remain hopeful that my Mom will be home soon and I can take the time to see this film.

I agree. I totally hated this movie when I saw it at the AMC theater. I would give it a solid D+.

I thought I was watching Iron Man set in the 1800s or something.

I don't see this "Sherlock Holmes" making it's way into my house anytime soon.

I never thought of Sherlock Holmes as a James Bond or Jason Bourne type.

Well, sometimes I end up liking a movie after watching it at home as opposed to seeing it at the theaters for some reasons.

Better sound, better environment, Subtitles, Alcohol.

No, not as I recall, but I think it worked well with the character in the movie quite well. I enjoyed his little "loosen up jaw, break jaw" prediction/assessment before actually fighting. It flowed with his completely analytical nature perfectly.

He was a pugilist.

I enjoyed this when we watched it earlier in the week. I want to watch it again because there is alot to pick up when you pay close attention.
