Alice In Wonderland

Wait till it comes out on DVD or Blu-Ray. Definitly one of the worst movies Tim Burton has ever done. Don't bother seeing it in 3d if you do go to the theaters though. There are no 3d effects or anything aside from some flowers that are in your face, that's it. The 3d adds to the very animated flick of it all, makes the characters seem even more fake.

I'd relate this movie to the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe that was made a few years back, in fact, that's all I could think about while watching it.

The movie is not a re-make, wheras Tim Burton has actually written it as a sequel to the original cartoon. It doesn't make much sense and all the characters got radically serious.

As for Johnny Depp, he goes through about 4 of his previous characters and there are times when he slips back into "Drunk Jack erish)and it happens so often it's hard to ignore. Everyone in the movie is entirely animated except for some facial features and Johnny Depp and Alice are the only "real" complete people (Sort of).

The story: (without telling anything spoilerish)
Alice is set to be married to some rediculously awkward guy. She stumbles into "Underland" and meets all the characters from the movie in one scene. They're all there, the second she gets there. :( She is part of some "prophecy" which is revealed later and everyone doubts she is the Alice of "last time" (sequel). Don't expect any character development from Alice. She winds up being exactly the same at the end of the movie. Johnny Depp (The Madd Hatter) is in 3/4 of the movie probably because he's Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton movie. None of this story relates to anything Tim Burton usually does, since the characters are just being borrowed for his own lame story that is really rediculous and doesn't offer much to "watch" but boredom. There's one lame fight scene that is so easy to predict, and adds nothing to "action" as it is slow paced and set-up. There are some parts that are meant to be "funny" but they aren't. I didn't hear one person laughing in the theater, and neither was I. The only time anyone laughed was when a kid in the audience said "Eiw" when one character kissed another's hand. That's always funny. Willard is in this movie (Chrispin Glover, I think his name is) and he is exactly the same character as Willard, also note during the movie that his eye patch changes color in different scenes, sometimes it's red, sometimes black. His body is animated on top of to make him seem lanky and awkward, which is unecessary, since he is anyway.

Also, in the preview, I noticed a Remake of TRON is in the works. This will also be a terrible movie.;) I can guarantee it.

I liked it.

I thought the 3D effects were well done, immersive but not distracting.

The movie was strange, but, I found myself interested and having fun with it. I agree with you that the movie was certainly 'darker' though - the Tim Burton 'creepiness' was really there.

Johnny Depp is a horrible actor. Why anyone would cast him in a movie is beyond me. You want a real actor? Jason Statham.....he is so freaking bad ***. Imagine him in Avatar.....but instead of being 10 feet tall and blue, he's just in the jungle kicking *** with a suit on.

Can you say Oscar?

Woah, I typed "Drunk Jack Sparrow" character, but it says "Drunk Jackerish" I didn't have this problem before I installed windows7. Ick. Also, Jason Statham would make a good character, but I prefer him in action movies, like "transpoter" and "Death Race".

This movie was purely a reason to spew a movie and make some money off of it. It is just bad. It's worth seeing only so other people know how bad it is and I don't feel so alone on that basis. As for the sound? Oh, that was terrible too. The whole movie was CGI, and had no reason to have actors in it at all. granted, it was not "Fern Gully in Space" as the previous popular CGI movie, and it is definitly not any good. Maybe the TRON remake in the previews was a hint at things to come in the actual movie. In fact, even though I fully expect the new TRON to be as bad as "Plan 9 From Outer Space," I fully believe this movie is one of the worst of all time, and that TRON may actually be better.

Basically, if you haven't seen this, let me put it in something maybe everyone's seen.

-Imagine, if you will, that someone directed a movie called "Snow White and The 7 Dwarves" a sequel in which Snow White returns to the Dwarve's house, and rallies them together to form an army with all the furry woodland creatures and cute birds to assault the wicked witch's army of evil trees and apples or something. They spend an hour building the non-existant excitement of a battle on the horizon, but it never really occurs. Instead, there is a prophecy described where Snow White must take a Smith and Wesson shotgun from the holy city of Anubis and slay a giant 3 headed dog for no reason other than to make a pathetic action scene in a movie. Once she unloads round after round of salt-shot on the creature (Disney Movie) she then quotes all the lines heard in the movie in case you forgot them, and then says one really cliche quote that the wicked witch tends to say all the time, before slaying the giant evil dog of Hades once and for all. Once she slays it, the army of woodland creatures and the army of trees and ugly apples throw down their 9millimeters and rapiers and declare a truce for some reason. Captain Jack Sparrow is there making stupid sounds as he gargles some rum and whiskey and then tells everyone how he got his eyes cut out in Mexico and once was a bad director who wore women's underwear while riding roller coasters. He then does a dance and falls down and throws up. -The end.

I just got back from watching it, I actually really enjoyed it. Although I never grow tired of Depp/Burton. I can see why the rehashed Jack Sparrow would bother you, but the creepy Tim Burton style never loses its luster, IMO. I can see why it reminded you of the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, the story was fairly weak and predictible, but if you like Depp he did a decent job of carying the movie. Sound was not bad either, with a few decent bass scenes.

I saw a longer trailer for it the other day and it looked bad to me, bad and creepy - really creepy. (and not the kinda creepy that is somehow good or redeeming, just the kind that makes me not want to see it or it's trailers again).

I wouldn't really call this movie creepy either. If anything it's "Cute" There were no disturbing creepy images. When I think Creepy, I think "Eraserhead."

Tim Burton did really well on some movies, before he starts rehashing ideas. Those were:
Ed Wood
Nightmare Before Christmas
Edward Scissor Hands
Big Fish
Mars Attacks (one of my favorites)

Stuff like Corpse Bride, Batman Forever, and this, are all recycled ideas and they suck. Batman Forever was terrible, really bad.

Those are great movies, like them all and just watched Mars Attacks again last week. Burton only directed Batman and Batman Returns (I like them both), the other 2 crappy sequels (Batman Forever, Batman & Robin) were directed by Joel Schumacher with Burton only on Batman Forever as a producer.

Of all of his movies, Mars Attacks was my least favorite. I still enjoyed it, but have no need to own it. The first Batman was great. I like Corpse Bride almost as much as Nightmare Before Christmas, and more than James and the Giant Peach. Edward Scissorhands is one of my favorite movies. Beetlejuice is a classic goofy Burton as well.

I just looked him up and it looks like he is doing a remake of Frankenweenie LOL. I actually liked the original short.

All the Alice Woes, Blows.

I'm sad to hear about all the bashing on this movie. I have tickets for a Monday afternoon Imax 3-D show. My wife wanted to see it, and it's our anniversary Monday. So I'm taking her. Still, I was hoping for something decent. I'm taking her to the best theatre in the state. I hope it's not a big waste of money. Oh well...

Everyone has a different opinion, as you can see from what people say about other films in this thread, so you have to go into it and try to take reviews with a grain of salt. I still think I might go see this one in theaters.

We just saw it and all three of us( Wife, son and I) loved it. 3D was some of the clearest I have yet seen, and it did not get in the way of the film. I am a HUGE Burton fan and he did not disappoint with the visuals that I expect from him. I HATE CGI usually, but the way they mixed the live action with the CGI really worked for this film.

ps, either on purpose or by accident or whatever, I think there was an anti-communist message in this movie. That is a huge plus for me:)

Tomorrow 4 of us are suppose to be going to see this with prepaid reserve seating at a 3D Imax. I can't tell how how worried I am that you liked it and AcuDefTech Guy hated it. I'm considering just staying home, taking the loss on the purchased ticket but saving on gas, parking and popcorn. :D :p

I wish I had seen Avatar twice. :)
Tell me you at least cracked a smile.

See it, you will like it. Not some stupid propaganda piece like Dances with Smurfs was. Lots of eye candy and Burtons twisted but beautiful visuals.

too drunk to smile, had a couple of dirty martinis and they went to my head :)

Where did you believe the anti-communist message was? I'm curious to know. Write it in white text so people don't have to read spoilers, like this:
White Text.
So you have to highlight it to see.

Well, since you already paid, you have to see it.

Avatar was awesome - should have won best picture/director.:D

My 8 yr old daughter also loved Avatar; she did not like Alice In Wonderland either.

I don't know if it means anything, but I've never seen or read Alice In Wonderland before (any versions). So I have nothing to compare it to. I had absolutey no expectations.

I cared about the characters in AVATAR. CHARACTER development is the key. That was what made me like AVATAR so much. I cared about who lives and dies in the movie. Without character development, all you have is special effects.

With Alice In Wonderland, I couldn't care less about any character like the Mad Hatter, the White Queen, the Red Queen, or Alice. It had absolutely no character development whatsoever. I don't ever want to see Alice In Wonderland again.

What the heck is this movie about anyway?:D

A delusional girl? Psychotic girl who had hallucinations?:D Did this Wonderland world actually exist in the movie or was it all in her head?
