Thank you, that's good to know. Just one less "I wonder if..." to haunt my listening serenity. The Audyssey MultiEQ on my Denon Receiver crosses my 7002s at 40Hz. I've switched them from 60 to 80Hz, with no dramatic difference. As mentioned, I have 3 (12") Hsu Subs which are more than adequate for my room. I spend more time and effort attenuating and blending low frequencies rather than pumping them up. I've also noticed a muddy mess when I set my fronts to large.

Also, sorry to disappoint you all, but I've decided to sell my entire setup and replace it with some Bose gear. Don't fret my friends, I will hang myself shortly afterwards.
You must be joking, right?:D

Isn't it a little premature for April Fools?:D

on a more positive note, I picked up another pair of BP10's on craigslist this weekend for $300, they sound amazing, just as I knew they would.
Don't you already have like 30 pr of DefTech speakers?

How big is your house?:D

My house isn't that big, but Def Techs are like jello, there's always room for it. Did you see I finally posted some pics of my bedroom system in the gallery.

My listening room is 18' x 22' with 12' ceiling. I use (2) Def Tech BP7002s for my mains, a C/L/R 2300 center, (4) BPX Bipolar for side and rear surrounds, and (3) Hsu VTF-3 MK2 Subwoofers. Overkill? Don't be ridiculous. What I'd like to know is how much dynamic range, impact and overall wow factor the 7002s are giving up to their bigger brothers, the BP7001SC and BP7000SC? I have all the extra juice I need to feed these suckers whatever they desire, but will the extra dough spent on either of these behemoths really transport me into such realms of sonic rapture that I would never consider second guessing my extra cash outlay? In other words, how much better, really, are the two flagship Def Tech towers over the third level 7002s? Should I forget about it and just enjoy what I have? Are true audioholics so easily satisfied? Those unsure of the correct answers are obviously in the wrong forum.
I have both the 7000SC & 7001SC.

I would have to say the main difference is the Subwoofer section, not the midrange or treble, which are equal.

The subwoofer section of the 7000SC goes down to 20Hz @ 90dB +/-3dB for real, and shakes every single wall in my 3,025 s.f. house.

I just got a ATI AT3005 amp and so I was playing with the volume the other day. With the remote, I was standing OUTSIDE my HT room, and I cranked up the volume to -10dB on the Denon 5308. I was listening to SACD 2.0 (Michael Jackson Thriller - Billy Jean:D). The Setting is DSD-Pure Direct Mode. So the only speakers active were my 2 BP7000SCs. My Dinning room is on the opposite side of the house compared to the HT room. I put my hands on dinning room wall, and the wall was shaking significantly!

Are the subs in the 7000SC more powerful than the SC Trinity or the mighty SVS/HSU/Epik?

No, of course not.

Since you already have dedicated HSU subs, the BP7002s are just fine.

First time upgrade to Def Techs and need some advice

Hello audio enthusiasts. I am finally upgrading my current system to Def Tech and could use some advice. But first some history...

Current setup.....
Klipsch Reference Series....
RF-82 Mains
RC-52 Center
RS-42 Surrounds
RW-12D Sub
Yamaha RX-V1800
Mac Mini (HTMAC)
Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD Blu Ray
Toshiba A35 HD-DVD Player
Panasonic 58V10 display
Monster 2500 Power Center

OK, that's the current system going to be replaced. I do about 90% movie watching a very little music, but I do occasionally, sooo....The room is oddly shaped and looks like a trapezoid. It's about 15'x20' with 8 ft ceilings. Wood floors, leather couches, etc (nothing special)...

So here is what I was thinking, BUT PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE...

BP7002 fronts
CLR 2500/3000 (I'm not sure which would be ideal to match up)
BPX surrounds
Supercube Reference

the room is a little small and shaped weird to do a 7.1, but I could move the couches around (possibly).

Eventually I am getting rid of the Yamaha and getting Emotiva separates.

Questions:
1) What do you guys think of the package I am putting together?
2) The BP7000SC would run me about $1400 more for the pair, is it worth the upgrade (that difference pays for the Emotiva gear)
3) If I did decide to go higher end, would I also have to upgrade the surrounds and center?
4) Am I going to hear a large difference in the 6 1/2's and 10" sub of the CLR 3000 vs the 5 1/4's and 8" sub of the CLR2500?
5) When the specs on the sub built into the bp7002's says 300 watts, is that RMS or total power? I have been looking everywhere and can't find the answer.
6) Also, is the RMS of the Supercube Reference 1800 watts, or total power? (I'm guessing total power)
7) Someone told me I would need to place the towers about 4 ft from the wall to get the appropriate soundstage, is this true, or what has your experience been?
8) What other things should I be considering for my first Def Techs?

Sorry I'm a Def Tech noob, but I really want to do this right (within my budget of course)

Thanks for the help!!

FSU, since you already have a sub and are considering buying another sub, I would go with SVS or Hsu for far less. I would also forgo the powered centers and stick with non powered like the LCR2000 (used) or LCR2002 (new) and some good DT towers like the BP30(used) or BP7002. No need to buy the 7000 if your gonna use outboard subs. JMO.

Oh yeah, you need some space behind the bipolar towers but not four feet. 1-2 feet is good but placement is key. Whatever speakers you choose you want the same size drivers all the way around for timbre matching. So if you go with 6.5" go 6.5" all the way around so on with 5.25" go 5.25 all the way around.

Using the same driver size all the way around is reccomended, but not critical, especially with surround speakers. I use BP2X for surrounds in my main system, which only has 5.25" drivers and the rest of my speakers have 6.5" drivers, and it sound just fine.

I have my speakers 4 ft from the side walls and 2 ft from the front walls.

If I had more room I would also place my speakers 4 ft from the front walls.

Place the Active Subs facing each other and place the Passive Subs facing the side walls.

Just realize that bipolar speakers are more difficult to place than direct/front-radiating speakers. Make sure your dealer/store has a good return policy just in case it doesn't work out with your room.

If the bipolars don't work out in your room, I would recommend the Mythos direct-radiating
speakers.

Hey, I like this, a Def Tech owners thread. I get to join this thread thanks to Amazon. I was able to get 5 Def Tech Mythos 2s for a great price. I'll post pics when the Emotiva UMC-1 shows up.:D

I have a mythos 3 center and mythos 6 right and left. A def tech reference sub. Want to know what your opinions are on middle, height and rear surrounds. Should I go Mythos Gem, XL, or promonitor (800, 1000). I have junk now, in those three positions and want to replace. My room is 20x25x16 open into the kitchen, the opening is 15 feet. Receiver Onkyo tx-nr5007. The price is not a problem. If I need to I can buy sets one at a time to replace.

i purchased a pair of bp10s a few weeks ago for $250. i didn't realize at the time that they were the original bp10s and not the bp10b. while i do like the sound of the bp10s, i don't know if i'll be able to find the matching ctr...the clr1000, i believe...and the age of the speakers kinda has me turned off a bit. so it's my fault for not doing all my research before purchasing them.

i've now got my eyes on some of the supertowers(7004 or 7006) as well. my question is is the jump to the supertowers from the bp series to the bp supertower series a monumental jump in performance? i've demoed the supertowers at magnolia and was very impressed, but i don't really know if i'll need the built in subs as i already have two eD subs(a2-300 and a3s-250) in my set up. also, if i stick w/ the original bp10s, would the clr2002, with it's aluminum dome tweeter vs the original soft dome tweeter of the bp10, be a good match?

If you already have 2 dedicated subwoofers, then you definitely do not need to upgrade to the BP7004/6.

Any DefTech center speakers will match just fine with the BP10s. Theoretically you want to match the size of the tweeters & midranges, but it will sound great even if they do not match in exact size.

I have the original BP10s as well with the soft dome tweeters, and they matched just fine with the CLR 2002, and the CLR 3000 when I was using them as my mains. I still use them as surround back speakers and I don't think you will really even notice the difference in tweeters.

I emailed definitive about upgrading the BP10s to the BP10bs and here was the reply:

Thanks for your recent email to Definitive Technology. The original BP10s used two 1" soft dome tweeters, whereas the BP10Bs use two 1" aluminum dome tweeters. The newer BP10Bs produce a subtle improvement in detail and clarity.

In order to upgrade your BP10s to the same level of performance of the BP10Bs, you really would need to replace the tweeters as well as the crossover networks. The crossover networks in your BP10s won't properly blend the new aluminum dome tweeters to the 6.5" bass/midrange drivers. (You could actually keep your 6.5" drivers. The performance of the newer 6.5" drivers and the older 6.5" drivers is very similar.)

Honestly, the difference in sound quality between the BP10s and BP10Bs is fairly subtle. Since the cost of each tweeter is $60.00 and each crossover network is $100.00, it would be hard for me to recommend paying $440.00 for this upgrade.

If you need any other information, please email me at cpelkowski@definitivetech.com.

Thanks Again,

thanks for the inquiry. i emailed chet yesterday as well and got pretty much the same answer. basically the crossover network was not designed for the newer tweeters. i'm using the bp10s as mains now with my older energy center speaker. while the bp10s sound great in 2 channel, when they're used in conjunction with my current center something just seems a little off. i'm using a yamaha rx-v765 as a pre with an adcom gfa 7400 5 channel amp powering the speakers.

i guess my ears have developed to the point of actually being able to notice a difference in timbre across the front speakers. i'm not yet completely sold on re-placing my current energy set-up with deftechs, but i will be on the lookout for a clr2002 to match up with the bp10s. i just need to save up some cash. what i really want to do in the near future though is get a pair of bp7004s for the front and sell off one of my eD subs.

i see you live in charlotte? i live in indian trail...small world...
