Over the holidays I started playing with acoustic panels and bass traps. I will post some pictures soon, but I lined the rack wall facing the speakers and put some speaker grill cloth over it to finish it. Then I picked up 4 Auralex bass traps / LERNDs locally for cheap (20 each) and have been playing around with some panels from a friend. They are very light and managable, so I figured why not.

So far, the bass traps seem to help, they have tightened the lower mid-bass and helped to some extent with ringing down low. I don't have really any way to 'test' them, but if I play sweeps and put my head in the corner, I can really hear the difference with the bass traps there. Screaming into them also is pretty impressive.

My friends contribution was some pretty handy stuff that I lined the rack with and I really think helped the treble and 'balance' of the room.

Then I put some panels by my rear speakers that use my speaker mounts (which are through-bolted into my concrete wall, so I can do pull-ups off them no problem) to hold them up.

Not perfect, but, I'm not really to start hammering the wall yet.

Overall the room sounds better. The room already had a low noise floor (even the A/C uses a very wide duct to reduce air noise), and adding these things has made it almost earie in here. It's like sounds that come in get 'sucked' up. The room isn't over-dead, there are still lots of reflective surfaces, but there is a interesting difference.

I want to do something under the screen, I've been thinking diffusion rather than absorption, except behind the speakers. I don't want to add a bunch of panels and kill the rooms 'liveliness.'

Holidays left me with my camera floating around, I'll gank my camera back for this weekend.

I added Auralex Gramma's under my subs also, expecting it to be a bit of a waste, but it really does seem to be an improvement. Feels like I'm listening more to my subwoofers and less to the floor and whats around it.

I watched District 9 in DTS-Ma 5.1 tonight. The JTRs just keep impressing me more. This room was so crazy even its nightmares are scared of it. I had it very loud, ear warming loud, and they never flinched. Never once lost composure. Amps yawned.

That's funny cause a couple of weeks ago I ordered Gramma's for the Captivators. Only received one (the other is on BO) but based upon your expierence I'm even more anxious to try them out.

D9 was a pretty good work out for the subs and I liked the movie. 9 is up for tonight and is supposed to be a great bass tester.

Haha, yea, I know, I know. I'm /pretty/ good though, I only crank it when it counts.

...I finally got my camera home and didn't have the right lense so I'll re-take some better ones this weekend.

Interesting ... I find the more I look into room acoustics the less I know . When you consider more than one listening position there are just so many variables that something like Audyssey starts to make sense (regardless if it works or not). In any case a applaud your efforts

BTW, the picture and audio quality of 9 make it a no-brainer.

Nothing between the lines. Just some misplaced (shoulda posted in my HT Thread) frustration at my own attempts at acoustic treatments. If you’re happy with the results, it’s all good.

BTW the Great Grammas were a good call. The reduction of energy transfer to the floor has produced cleaner bass.

The Gramma's were a pleasant surprise, and the bass traps do help, but in the long term I'll get something better. They were so cheap, it was an impulse buy to hold me over until I get some time to research what my real approach will be to treating the room.


If I haven't beaten the dead horse enough yet: The real star of the year has been the JTRs. After watching reference disks like Terminator Salvation and Up recently, these speakers really can handle anything I throw at them. My favorite scene in Terminator Salvation is the helicoper crash. With the big screen and big sound now, it just makes me smile every time.

The most important thing is this: When I watch a movie, I set the volume and basically leave it. If it is too loud for me, I'll turn it down, if I want more impact, I turn it up. But I /never/ worry about my speakers or subs loosing their composure anymore, and that makes watching movies much more pleasurable.

I know I'm preaching to a fellow JTR owner, so, you know, but, I wanted to gush anyways.

One of the best things I have found about Jeff's speakers is the ability to field upgrade. I have some of the original Triple 12LF's (2007 models) and they have had the coaxial drivers and crossovers changed to make them 2009 models. I am considering buying the new 2010 midrange and crossover to make them equivalent to the new models.

What other speaker manufacturer gives you this option? Now if the cabinet design changes significantly this may rule out future upgrades but thus far, I have enjoyed this easy and inexpensive way to upgrade the SQ of my speakers.

A neat feature would be if Jeff built his speakers with some sort of Molex or Delphi connector, so that the end user could swap out the drivers and crossover without having solder or do any wiring. If he had pre-made harnesses it might save him some manufacturing time too. Donno, just thinkin'

Those Quintuples look impressive huh? Looks like you gain mostly extension, not SPL. Your T12s have 3db extra sensitivity and similar extension, they still seem to be the ultimate.

The five 8s stacked up look impressive though!

I wonder how they sound.

Cheers, yeah, big fan of lotsa power. I've been really stoked with it. The weak link is now the room, so, I've been considering my acoustic routes a bit but time hasn't permitted. I want to learn about treating a room a bit more before I buy anything expensive.

In the mean time I might buy two more Auralex LERNDs. I heard they are garbage (Although WmAx said they were good), but, man, they seem to work to me... and being able to get them at guitar center for cheap is nice. They'll hold me over until I figure what I want to do at least. :?
