Panasonic Tc-p46u1 - Any Opinions?

Walmart has the Panasonic TC-P46U1 on sale tomorrow for $788. I've been looking at TV's for our bedroom and I think this could be a decent choice seeing that it's just a bedroom. I would want a G10 or better for my living room but that will have to wait...maybe.:)

I was in a Pauls Tv a few nights ago and saw the 46'' G15 on sale for 1199.00(with blu-ray) My brother picked up the 50'' G15 with a bluray player for 1400 bucks...its crazy how cheap the good quality tv's are getting. I personally would wait a month or two and save up an extra couple hundred to get the G10 or G15.

I'm glad that I was sitting down - you've got to warn us before mentioning that you might finally get a new TV. :D

Hopefully the TV gurus will see this and chime in. I'd say definitely take a look at it at the store. Panasonic's website states that it does not have the anti-reflective coating on the panel. That would be a big deal to me, but maybe not to you. Heck, does Walmart charge a restocking fee? If not, you could snag it and then decide for yourself what you think of it. That's a good price for a 46" plasma from Panasonic, IMO.

Just curious, is 46" the perfect size for you? Quick copy/paste/avs search function shows that people say that you lose some PQ compared to S1 in terms of contrast and shades of gradation, but that it consumes less power.

I felt like I was playing a "choose-your-own-adventure" game with all the links I opened up (right now at 6). This is the first time I've seen this ever, looks like Europe/UK, but what a cool comparo function. I don't see the model in consideration listed, but perhaps one of them is an equivalent with simply a different model designation.

IMO at this particular moment, if you're thinking G series, I say go for the V series if just for the avoidance of 3:2 pulldown. Is it a big deal? Probably not for most. OTOH, if you only watch TV, then who cares. The reason I'm saying this is the S1 with a pro cal will look better than the V series without pro cal. IOW, if you're going to throw down somethin' extra for somethin' special, I vote for the calibration for say $200 extra over the OTB improvements of say G10 over S1, both of which apply 3:2.

All in all, I think the TV will do just fine for a BR. But don't feel rushed either, there are always good sales that pop up on Pana plasmas. Not any given day, but it seems like there's something every month, maybe . . . I dunno. For instance, not long ago, I linked a sale which was basically free Pana bluray player with purchase of Pana plasma, and the s1 42" + BD 60 was about $800 IIRC. Yes, you lose 4", but you do have the PQ improvement with the BDP there. I expect more sales this year.

My Pana friend called me, asking for the OK on a 50" S1 today. On top of his usual employee pricing, there is a special sale that ends tomorrow for him, and I'm not even going to say what that is out of fear of taking the air out of people's sails here.

It's for mostly TV and the occasional movie... I was originally looking at 42" 720p pannys but you know how this hobby will escalate on you. The sales are starting to heat up. Sears will have the TC-P42S1 for $649 on black Friday so...??? I've read around a little and realize that the U1 is inferior to the S1 but will I care in the bedroom system. Let's face it. I've got a 20" CRT in there now.:D

Just fishing...

Thanks guys!

Hmm. I did not know about the Best Buy deal yesterday. This morning I walked into a walmart at 8:00 AM and found a stack of the 46U1 and picked one up. I am not sure if it was that much of an upgrade over my 37" LCD. I might end up returning it and get a bigger one once the prices come down. To make matters bad I hurt my back trying to get the TV out of my van in my drive way. Should have waited for the wife to come help me.

Ouch. I hope that your back feels better soon. I tweaked mine once picking up a speaker out of my hatchback - it didn't start hurting until the next day, but I knew when I did it that it was going to.

Sorry that you missed this one, but like you said - there will be more. I thought that I got a smokin' deal on my G10...until the price dropped another $300 and a free BD60 was included about a week later. I still got it cheaper than I expected to get a 50" plasma, so I wasn't too upset. You'll find a good deal, regardless of if the deal is even better a few days later.

I check dealnews.com every day, which is where I saw that deal. They have pictures on the sides that let me scroll through the list quickly, so it only takes a minute or two a day to look.

Doug - not quite as inexpensive, but 6th Avenue has some savings on G15 models (some info linked here).

I'm thinking 46" for the bedroom and 58" for the family room...but this is killer tempting. Thanks, Adam
Happy to do it. 58 for the family room? Sweet! That would be nice.

I'm just posting deals on TVs that I think are decent. There's also a C1 model on sale at Best Buy (I think), but I don't think that you'd be happy with that.

Doug, you mentioned wanting a 58" for the family room.

Best Buy has the Panasonic TC-P58S1 for $1480. That's even cheaper than their Black Friday price - so I'd say there's no need to feel compelled to jump on this. I just wanted to let you know in case you were ready to get one.
