I am not so sure I know what to make of this album? It has some great moments, but I didn't fall immediately in love with it. I've listened to it about 15 times so far and some of the tracks are unexpected. Some of it sounds like their earlier work (the Delerium days) and it has hints of Insurgentes, but I have to say, I like Insurgentes better. The second disc is good.

So, what yer saying is that it's a Use Your Illusion scenario? It probably would've been a better idea to release the best tracks as a single CD vs a double set? Just curious, as I'm still waiting for Amazon to deliver my copy.

It has a more "personal" and/or introspective feel to it. It is not too much like their previous recent work. There are some hard spots and some soft spots. FOABP I liked the hard stuff vs the softer stuff, but on this album, the softer stuff is better IMO. Both of the discs in the set have a similar sound to them, so I would presume they were done in the same time period. Disc 1 is 14 tracks while the second disc is only 5. I like it, but there are only a few tracks that I really like, while others just kind of seem to wander off. It isn't an entirely "new" sound, but it is a bit differnt. Not bad, but not exactly what I was expecting.

Just wanna say thanks to all of those on teh recomendations for Porcupine Tree. I obtained their latest CD and although I didn't listme to it in depth, I really liked what I heard so far. I can see myself making this my new favourite band. Absentia and Stupid Dream are on my got have list. Thanks again.

Yes, In Absentia would be the one to pick up next IMO.

OK, so I got to listen for the first time last night. It put me to sleep about 2/3 of the way in. I didn't dislike what I was hearing, but still.............. it put me to sleep. In defense of the work, yesterday was squat day, so maybe fatigue had something to do with it. So, I dunno, maybe I need to hear it a few more times, and see if the scenario repeats.

The Incident

I listened to some cuts at John's and liked it. Brought it home and not so much. We have very different rigs and so some of the sweetness that I heard at the Garcia house didn't translate. To be specific, guitars and their general business, sounded strident, tinny and compressed, the rich vocals, just not as rich. That's something my rig generally doesn't do. It's laidback and very 3D. It just doesn't play well with this CD. I tried some other selections to hear if anything was off...nope. I probably won't play this one much until the DVD A comes out. I think it needs the space. All that said, my other PT selections are all DVD As and sound stellar. I do own a CD copy of FOABP and never felt it sounded that good on my rig either. As far as the music goes...I'll give it some time, but nothing jumped out at me. IA and DW are much more accessible. I prefer SD to LS and the Arriving Somewhere concert is another favorite (if only they sounded that way at the SF venues).

I just saw them last weekend in Baltimore and they sounded great. Not perfect....but great. A very entertaining show, however I felt very "short" because I had to peer over and around alot of "giant" people. The best view was at the bar and I caught most of the second set there.
The next day I went to a record store called the Sound Garden and dropped $50 quickly. Found PT's Stupid Dream DVD-A for $14. Cool!! And I just ordered the DVD-A of Fear of a Blank Planet from burningshed.com. I love that there is a band out there that cares about sound quality and their fans!!

Haven't got any Porcupine Tree CDs at all and alot of people here have mentioned how good they are. Which of their albums do you recommend me getting?

I also have Stupid Dream...5.1 and Lightbulb Son 5.1...all excellent.

I forget the hirez formats but some of them are dts as well as dvda and all have hirez 2ch stereo mix on the disc/s.

Buy the Arriving Somewhere Dvd concert now...looks and sounds aaaamazingly good with just enough artful film tricks to keep it interesting w/o becoming annoying.

Steve Wilson is considered by several in the recording/audio industry to be the master of surround mix recordings. He has done work for several Opeth records as well as other British/Swedish prog/metal bands.

AFAIK, it is a 5.1 mix on DVD, not DVD-A and for $169, probably isn't worth it. Better off waiting for the DVD-A like the rest of us. The limited set was already mentioned earlier in this thread.

These guys take pride in what they do, and I think business-wise, if they want to sell CDs and/or DVD-As at a premium (you can download their compressed music from itunes just like everyone else's) the only way to do it is giving more to the fans: Nicer packaging, bonus material, several audio formats, videos, lyrics, etc. Non-downloadable stuff that people want to own and collect. Colin Edwin (the bassist) and Steven Wilson have known each other since they were in their teens and he has said that recording has always been an obsession for SW, so high resolution multichannel seems logical, no?
Like others in the forum, I preordered the Incident CD, and I'm still digesting it after 3 weeks of repeated listening, but I will most likely buy the DVD-A when it comes out.

I too pre-ordered and had to wait a bit for the Alice In Chains release so as to get all the cd's in one mailing...nonetheless, I'll wait out the affordable multi-ch mix if ever released. In the meantime their other material is plenty enjoyable. So much in fact that I think I could go years without any new PT stuff and be content. I've done that with Days of the New and have been listening/collecting music for over 30 yrs and waited several years between artists new releases. Food for thought...suppose PF never put out another release after DSOTM...many of us would still be content with it alone. If a band puts out some really good material...it has a lasting affect without need for more.

Gave The Incident another go today...just doesn't play well with SDAs. Maybe I'll take John's suggestion and disconnect the cable. The Incident in 2 channel is just too crowded and when the soundstage is expanded, there's just not enough separation for the multiple lead lines and melody lines not to reflect off each other and produce cacophany. FOABP in 2 channel isn't nearly as bad as this. Guitar solos sound like nails across the blackboard. When it gets quiet and individual instruments are separated, then it's heaven. Overall, I can detect the sound Wilson is going for, but it's not acheiveable on my rig. This one's taking a vacation.

It's quite possible that Wilson incorporated a digital crosstalk cancellation process during the mixdown which could b clashing with the SDA process. I know running 2 crosstalk cancellation processes concurrent can result in a big old blurry mess.
