* Everything Important To Know About A/v Surround Receivers, But Were Afraid To Ask.*

Thanks for the reply, It was an interesting read.

From what I gather if you are looking for receiver you want to find out what size caps it uses, then how big a Power supply it has. This is for the power amp side of the AVR.

For the Pre amp side it becomes harder to tell because they use smaller caps.

ok... So what Do I look for when narrowing down the search? What things do you look at when evaluating what receivers or Even Separate power Amps.

Thanks
Superfly
Hey, Good Morning Superfly. :)

I got some great mags at home, but the articles on them are not free from the Internet. :( The writer's name is Richard Hardesty, and his articles on amplifiers and preamplifiers (Stereo or Surround Processors), covers many pages from a series of magazines. And you will find anything you need to know from these. The mag is called "Widescreen Review". It is one of the very best articles on these subjects, with various reviews of all type of components.

But, you can easily Google any type of words like "Power Amplifiers Technical Aspects", and "Surround Processors Internals and Explications"; or something similar to that, and you'll get all type of good info to give you a good education on what to really look for.
How's that? Fair enough?

*** Multichannel Power Amplifier:
1. Check the weight, heavy is good. Heavier is better.
2. Look for at least 250 or even 300 cubic inches of heat sinks per channel.
3. Look foir at least 20,000uF per channel. More is better.
4. Look for an extra oversized main power transformer, or two, or more. Look for at least 1KVA, or 1.5KVA. More is better. Toroidal (donuts shape) are best.
5. Look for neat cablings, short paths, lots of smaller caps, at least two per channel. More is better.
6. Look for good quality power transistors, more is better, 4, 6, or even 8 per channel. Good Op-Amps...

*** Surround Processor (or Mutichannel Preamplifier):
1. Look for a good power supply, with a good size transformer. Toroidals are best.
2. Look for good processing power: DSP chips (more is better), Dacs (best grades with Dual Differential Balanced mode are best, more is also better), neat cabling with the shortest signal paths, high grade resistors, high grade circuit boards, switches, relays, gold, silver, high purity copper, etc., etc., etc.
3. Look for all the type of connections you need, and good ergonomics.

These are the most basic aspects for what to look for.

Enjoy your day, :)
Bob

Psstt: If you have the chance, at night, very late at night, go to an airport, or to an airplane's cemetery, and climb inside the cockpit of a big airplane. Then, start dismantling the steel covers (don't forget to bring a good flashlight) that are parts of the instrumentation display panels (bring some tools with you), and look behind to see what kind of very nice parts they used. That'll give you a good idea for what to look for in an audio component. But don't tell anyone that I told you that. OK? ;)

One for the home theater room, and one for the bedroom.

1. About a great front projector for your home theater room, to mate with your new receiver,
and for only $2,999. :)

* Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6500 UB 1080p Home Theater Projector:

2. And for your bedroom sound system, a flat panel display.
You got the choice between these five, but at the end, only two are the very best.
And they are all very affordable.

* 5 on the line: Flat Panel Face Off:

---> Hey, you do need a display to go with that new receiver, right? :)
And you do need two; one for the main theater room, and one for the bedroom.

Okay here is a stupid question, which has been touched on a little bit in the previous pages. What the hell do I do with the pre out on my Onkyo 875??? My understanding is that is for the connection of an amplifier?.?.? If so how is it connected, what, besides more power is the benefit, and what should I plug into it???

Yeah, those analog pre-outs are for connecting to external amplifiers, which most of us do not need since most of us don't have 1,000 sq ft HT rooms.:D

Also, if you have that upgraditis bug, you can just get some amps anyway and hook them up.:D

Any suggestions?

I listened to the Marantz 8002 today. It really is a few steps better than the Denons $2k receiver. The Pioneer Elite sounded very good also. The denon lacked the volume of comfort, and the depth. I was listening to Diana Krawl.
I switched from those 3 and then to the marantz 6003 which disappointed me. I didnt think I would notice much a differnece, but there surely was.
I wish they had a few Yamaha's to test (rx-v863 or 1065, or the 3800)
As I dont know how that would compare to the 8002.

I want 8002 sound quality
PLUS...

MP3
RJ45 network drop
3-4 HDMI that can scale
all the badges (dts, thx, etx)
HDRadio
XM
SIRUIS
7.1 or.2
I like the shut down of all other processes while in Stereo listen mode.

Anyone with ideas regarding the 8002 vs Yam ?

Are you serious?

And you did a double-blinded test with volume-matching and everything and still found that the Chinese-made Marantz sounds better than the Japanese-made Denon?

Good point on the volume matching and I suspect the OP won't be able to tell the difference in a DBT test. But wether or not its made in Japan or China is irrelevant and has no bearing on the quality of sound if and only if the company that has setup in China maintains the same level of QC as they did from their homeland.

Since there are fewer 8***'s made than the lower models, my guess is the A team puts them together whether their ese is Chin** * or Japan***:D:D:eek:

LOL. They are both made by the same company.

I haven't dated a Japanese-made girl, but I did date a Chinese-made one for several years. Despite some extreme erratic-ness in behavior; her performance was definitely "phile" quality.

Don't knock something just because it's made in China.

I thought all women have erratic behaviors?

I think we need some receivers from Korea and cars from China to mix it up.:D

Actually, the Denon 5308 sounds a lot sweeter, juicer, beefier, more chocolatey and more exquisite than the Marantz 8002.:D
To be fair the 5308 is more comparable to the Marantz separates or the last Marantz 9600. The 8*** are more in line with the Denon 4***
