Personally I love the old westerns. I don't get why they are no longer done.

Do you have a bluray player? I don't remember, and don't see one in your sig.

If and when you do, watch How The West Was Won.

If you only have DVD capability, just wait. The remaster makes all the difference, and IIRC the DVD used the same master as for the VHS anyways. It's the biggest leap in improvement from any DVD to BD that I know of perhaps. Although Monsters Inc looks pretty dramatic too.

Pale Rider has excellent PQ as well. I have Unforgiven, 3:10 to Yuma, but the first doesn't have the same level of PQ, even if an excellent movie, and I was sort of disappointed with the latter.

Appaloosa was recent and was OK. 3:10 was acceptable, but not classic. I didn't like Unforgiven.

I think the key is "old" westerns... part of attraction to the genre was the way they were shot, and the culture that existed around them. It seems to me that it would be hard to modernize. Sometimes a classic should remain a classic.

Why doesn't anybody still produce "disco" albums. The genre adapted and developed to attract modern culture.

I'd say just enjoy the old ones.

I just don't know about you John...:) The scene in the saloon at the end when he kills Little Bill is one of my favorites.

Man, I thought Appaloosa was horrible.. 3:10 was decent.. Open Range was good.. And Unforgiven was great.

There have been a few (310 to Yuma my most recent favorite) but I think that decades of movies and a 1950s-1960s TV lineup that was 50% westerns just about used up all the plots that you can make out of horses, cattle, saloons, wide-open towns and the coming of the railroad.

They aren't very many but the few that are released are quality.

Open Range
The Proposition
Deadwood (yeah I know its a show...)
Appaloosa
3:10 to Yuma
Assassination of Jesse James

Not a stinker among the bunch, and quite a few of them are classics (James/The Proposition).

But 3:10 on a ultra should be awesome

Guess that I don't need to see that one, now.

:p :D Just ribbin' ya, man. I think that I actually saw that at some point. It didn't leave much of an impression if I did.
But 3:10 on your ultra should be awesome! I know it sounded awesome on my lowly  PB12-Plus

No Country For Old Men appealed to me for some reason. ;) It's set in the 1980's but is in the vein of classic westerns (albeit from the Coen brothers).

But you're right, lsiberian...there is not much made in this genre currently. Lonesome Dove...old but still awesome. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a must-have classic in my book, along with Silverado, Quigley Down Under, and many others of worth.

Thank you, Thank you for the unsigned red chicklet..... but NO I am not LOTR =Lord of the Rings... I believe he said he was hiking the Himalayas. If you want to tell him "Hi LOTR" wait until hegets back. When I backpacked it was in the Wemieneiche in the Rocky Mountains :)

Have a Good Day and Peace

That one was quite good. It was different than I expected, but it was definitely worth watching. As I mentioned in the thread, it isn't an action movie though.

Maybe I have to revisit Unforgiven but it just felt drawn out and over done.
I'll agree a little. There is a lot of Clint pausing and making facial expressions but that's part of what makes him great.:) The last part of the movie though...just very bad a$$! It makes the whole film.

There is a statute of limitations on spoilers isn't there?:p

Since Unforgiven (one of my favs) is mentioned, there's also a lot more from that era: Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, Wild-Wild West (hey, it's a western).

It's a genera less in vogue than at some points in the past, but it's not quite dead. Find me a (A-B grade) fantasy film before HarryPotter and LotR hit theaters. I think the last one before those was Conan and Dragon Slayer.
