if i split that signal though, would the sound level drop in half? i am considering just picking up another control module for $30

I wouldn't expect the signal to drop in half. However, you should be able to compensate for any attenuation by increasing the source signal strength (by increasing the subwoofer output on your computer) or by increasing the subwoofer output level using the control module(s).

wow that was fast, i have the control module.
the minijack to rca splitter didnt work so i will try to find a mini jack to mini jack y adapter now and give that a shot.

well the splitter works, only thing that seems odd to me is that i have to split the front L/R channel. the sub/center channel doesnt affect the sub at all..

Make sure that you're computer is set up to do bass management and send a signal to the sub.

for mp3s the sub connection does nothing, all bass is going thru the L/R
for a 5.1 movie, most of the bass is thru the L/R and he sub connection seems to only produce a low rumble that is hard to hear.

i am not sure what you mean by making my computer do bass management.
i have an xfi prelude. i will look around in the setting and see if i can find something.

On my Creative soundcard, there is a setting for bass management that allows me to set a crossover. That will send all frequencies below the crossover frequency to the subwoofer instead of the satellite speakers.

there we go! seems much better now, thanks!
the 3.5mm y-adapter on the center/sub channel is how i am accomplishing this.

i also had to enable te +15db subwoofer gain
